Hello fine patrons of this lovely forum! Let me first express my heartfelt appreciation for the great people that have shared such wonderful, well-organised information—you guys (and gals) have been invaluable to me in getting my first grow going successfully!
I inoculated four brf half pints about 2 weeks ago from an ms syringe and they are about 80% colonised so far—I plan to spawn them to coir in a shoebox when they finish up but had a quick question about coir volume I have had a difficult time finding an answer to. How much does coir expand when hydrated? I am only looking to make about 1.5 quarts so how much dry coir should I use? Does anyone have a formula to figure that out? Any tips would be much appreciated, thanks!

Coir expands many times its compressed volume, so it doesn't take much to make a single shoe box. It's going to vary by brand and require some trial-and-error on your part, but I find that with the one I use, about 160g is enough to make one quart expanded with enough left over to do a thin pseudocasing. The sub ends up being 2.25-2.5" thick in a 6qt box.
It's pretty cheap and running short would suck, so I'd aim to make a little more than you think you'll need. Leftovers can always be tossed under a bush or tree.

Where if you're alone, you know, you either come through it or you die, but in any case you avoid the fuss.'" - Terrence McKenna

Cheers mate- thanks for the quick response! I figured it was going to take some trial and error I just didn’t want to end up with a shitload of extra coir I couldn’t use the first time around. I guess I’ll shoot for around 180/200gms and see where that gets me.

This is what my babies looked like this morning

Nice healthy rhizomorphic growth in all 4 jars—I’d estimate another 4-5 days until they are colonised. Very happy how things are going so far—I made my spore syringe without a SAB so I was expecting to throw out a few jars to contam but so far so good.
