Cased too early. What next?
    #26364504 - 12/06/19 08:14 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Hi everyone,

I have mixed pasteurized straw+manure with millet spawn. Stupid as I sometimes am, I cased it directly with sphagnum peat moss / vermiculite / lime and let it sit under since yesterday...
Today I read, that I should have put the casing on only after the straw/dung has been colonized.
Should I take the casing off now? Or just keep it hydrated until after colonization?

Thanks in advance!

Leave it alone, it doesn’t really matter. These are cubensis right? I’d go with coir substrate and a coir top later next time and leave the casing mixture (v/p/l) for more exotic mushrooms. Obviously that kind of casing used to be standard but in my experience and many others, coir works better for cubensis. I just tried to grow a tray the way your doing it: using horse shit and differentiating colonizing and fruiting paramaeters, and the regular monotub with just coir/verm was chugging along.

The reason I say this is the way your doing leaves more steps that can be forgotten or fucked up or even contaminated

No, these are Panaeolus Cyanescens.

I see your point, but as said these are Pan Cyans. I don't case Cubes either.

Do you still think I should leave it alone?

How long did you leave it to recover? I have very little knowledge of growing panaeolus but I do know that a good culture should recover within 72 hrs.

I mixed it yesterday evening ~20 hours ago. Then pasteurized the casing (took me maybe 2 hours) let it cool ~2 hours and cased it ~5 hours ago.
Since then it's sitting in a warm dark room.
