Clump wont break in grain jar
    #26366064 - 12/06/19 11:44 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Gave my jars a shake at around 20% colonization but the largest chuck of mycelium would not break up and seems super dense. Any remedy or is it gonna be fine leaving the big clump. Also any way to avoid in the future?

A pinch of gypsum in each jar will help with the clumping. What grain did you use?

Normally that’s a sign that you don’t have very clean spawn. Are you using agar?

Yes agar wedges to rye. Could it be the fact that I have a large number of burst grains?

I used to use gypsum in my grain but i stopped after running out one day and couldn’t tell the difference without it. If u have too many busted grains that can definitely be part of the problem.

Overhydrating and/or overcooking grains can lead to clumping. Don't worry about it at this point. If the myc is healthy, it should readily colonize the clump throughout.

Yeah man burst grains and using wbs with cracked corn can cause a starchy mess from hell specially in the bottom of the jar.

yeah I think that was the culprit. <16hr recovery time after I shook them and things are looking good again.

Re: AstroMan's comment: This is a good-to-read post... thanks. Just made a bunch of grain jars, forgot the gypsum, and will now proceed as if all's perfect.

Try hydrating your grains less. More water equals higher chance for burst grains. 👍

Less burst grains = less sticky mess

I have the perfect recipe for oats.

Bang it hard on a cork yoga block.

I don't know what that is, but I use a scrap piece of rigid foam insulation for jar beating.  Dam right that works good, real good.  The foam sits on a concrete floor and I beat them sideways, that'll break almost anything up without breaking the jar.

I think The Mushroom Cultivator had a picture of a bike tire mounted to use as a banger.  I guess a lot of different things would work.

Shake your jars to get the clump against the glass, then repeatedly bang that edge of the glass against something like we're talking about above.

Sometimes that happens even if the grains are not obviously too wet.  You end up with a small, tight clump of colonized grain at first.  I don't really worry about it but I find it important to break up the clump for it to properly colonize the jar.
