Is it normal for a popcorn to begin changing colors during colonization?
    #26366005 - 12/06/19 10:36 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I have some popcorn that I inoculated on the 22nd of November. I am just now noticing that some of the kernels are beginning to turn a reddish pink color. It's not something growing on the kernals and the ones turning this color are already colonized with mycelium. Could this be endospores germinating within the kernel or what could it be?

All of these jars have been shaken so the mycelium looks a little odd.

My camera wont catch details good enough for you to see it in a photo.
I have never used corn before. I've always used rye berries.

Reddish pink popcorn should be pretty easy to spot and there might be something else you’re not seeing

I've read that it can be normal for colonized kernels to turn a reddish color. That seems to be what's happening here. I'll try taking photos when my phone charges but I don't think it will pick up the details well. This red color does not seem to be growing on the kernal but instead inside the kernal or the kernal itself is changing color.

I edited the original post to include photos of the kernels.

Did you just shake those? If not then that's not healthy. I see no red contams tho.

I just shook them to better expose the red that I'm seeing. So the red kernals is normal in your opinion?

So far looks normal, it's sucking the life(and moisture)out of those Kernels. Here is a couple current pics to compare. These are yellow kernels with just a few reds mixed it. It's whatever I had in the cabinet.

Don't hate on my Mnt Dew Mason jars, on sale cheaper then normal ones
