Bolete Hunters, a Question RE: Hypomyces
    #26365983 - 12/06/19 10:23 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I have been finding evidence of Hypomyces microspermus in one of the spots I frequent. Today I found 4 or 5 more specimens and I pushed them around with my feet to investigate and moved on to look in other areas.

I'm now concerned that I could have transmitted contaminated spores all over the place. Am I way off or should I be much more careful in the future?

Good question!

I am not a mycologist or a biologist or anything so I don't really know, but I just read a little bit about the spores and distribution.

It seems like you might be helping the parasite a little, but you're not introducing something new into the environment by walking around there, I think.  The parasite tends to reproduce asexually and range up to a couple hundred kilometers so it's probably already present in spores anywhere you'd walk around there.

I wouldn't really worry about it too much though it wouldn't be a bad idea to avoid kicking it and stepping on it, as that probably does help it on a small scale.

But idk--as I said I've got no background in science and I'm just speculating.

"...This suggests thepotential movement of aleuroconidia at the scale of a couple hundred kilometers, but not across larger expanses of the transverse ranges. These survival structures are thick-walled, highly pigmented and seem adapted for long term survival and potentially long distance dispersal by wind and or animals.
