Bacterial? Give it to me straight...
    #26365575 - 12/06/19 05:45 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I had some leftover wheat from some bulk grain jars, so I decided to put the leftovers in 2 pint jars, PC'd with the Qt jars for 90 mins at 15PSI, and that I'd drop a pasty in each and possibly do a g2g with them. They started out rather good, but I am starting to think one or both may be bacterial after some more reading and looking. I'm just not wild about the spots against the side of the jar where it's looking a bit wet.

Here's two different jars, ones further along than the other, but both are not instilling me with much confidence. Hoping a more seasoned eye can weigh in. Thanks!

What would you suggest I do with them then? A smaller grow in a tupperware container or something? Between the two it's probably a cup of spawn at most, not enough for a shoe box I wouldn't think.

Thanks for the advice though, I'll steer clear of a g2g with something looking like this and try g2g another day.

Qell let em colonize till 100%. If those spots don't colonize then definitely bacterial. I'd probably spawn em in a small Tupperware, but separately. Be sure the coir is not overhydrated and don't go high on the ratio. Start from scratch while you're at it.

Sounds good, I'll give them another couple of days, see if they fill in the voids and win lose or draw I'll drop them each in their own small container.

If they're bacterial just shy on the dry side with the sub to hinder the spread of the bacteria in hopes that the myc takes over?

Pretty much. I always go with a top layer as well, but just thin especially in a case like this.

That makes sense. Is the top layer another added layer of protection to try to hinder the bacteria as well? Or just stop any further contams from jumping in on the fight against my myc? Or both?

Top layer keeps moisture balanced. Helps produce even, dense pinsets IME

that outer layer of grains against the glass can take a little longer to show true. I'd suggest giving it another shakey shake and bang against a bicycle tire to break it all up and redistribute it all really good and even, and then see how it reconsolidates.

Great, thanks I'll try that when the time comes.

Makes sense, a little more time for the myc to work its way between the glass and the grain the the tighter spots. I'll give it another good shaking and see what happens in a few days.

Now that you've gone back to a top layer, do you find a better success rate with that or better yeilds, just a little more waiting involved?

Thanks for all the input folks  :takingnotes:

With healthy spawn the timeline should be comparable.
