If it were merely developed for the military things would have ended up differently. once again just because the government discovered something first doesnt discount everyrhing done in that industry by the private sector.

if you give all of apple and microsofts credit to the government then the private sector gets the credit for anti biotics for inventing the microscope and ultimately discovering the existance of microorganisms.

I'm not against funding research conducted for militaey purposes. military is a legitimate role of government.

Exactly. They revolutionized the industry, not the technology. They repackaged tech into very well-designed PRODUCTS.
Gates is a genius designer and a genius marketer. He’s no researcher though

In a predatory, greedy capitalistic fucked up way. Like I said, we can't make people/money have morals. Corporate greed is killing the world.

True story. My father invented a technology worth billions of dollars but because he was working for private industry all he got was his salary.

the thing is I'm actually not so much of an individualist. I'm a libertarian. I support individual rights. But I believe there needs to be social fabric. The thing is I believe that social fabric should be based on voluntary participation and consent, not coercion through the threat of force. Legally individual rights should be protected above all else. Personally I think people need community and cooperation.

IDK why you guys want to call me a jerk and say that its just common fucking sense and I am a :howmanybongripscanyoutake: I'm trying to have a thoughtful discussion not bicker and hurl personal insults.

Again, personal attacks.

Is it more likely that we disagree or that I agree with you I just want humanity to suffer?

Why automatically attribute malevolence to me when it could be a simple disagreement?

do you really want to talk things through and come to a conclusion or do you want to demonize any opposing view?

Dude don’t take it personally, it’s a political discussion, it can get heated.
You just seem to have come to a conclusion BEFORE the discussion started, that’s all.

It has nothing to do with how I'm taking it. I'm not offended. I really dont care what motivations you try to pin on me.

I'm just amazed people would actually prefer hostility to productive, civil discourse. I want to talk with my fellow man.

and I'm amazed that people can really believe that I actually have ill will toward humanity when there is a much more likely  explanation. we simply disagree.

there is a difference between heated discussion and straight up insults and personal attacks. there is no actual need to call people jerks.

My dad’s name is still on the patents but the patents were owned by his employer. At some point his employer sold the patents to another company for hundreds of millions of dollars

My dad also invented a medical device that was approved by the FDA last year. They started a company to get the device approved and marketed but by the time the venture capitalist get their payout there probably won’t be anything left for the people who actually have the original shares in the company. It’s pretty fucked up actually.

Essentially we live in a society where the only people who make a lot of money are the people with money: the investors.

Yeah those prices sound about right heh. Our insurance caps out around $7500 in a calendar year though so once you go over that everything else is just free (outside of the monthly fees)

I dunno, am used to bills around here. Think I said earlier, we make 6figures but after bills/insurance we’re pretty much month to month

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
--Hanlon's razor

I kid, but you did kinda walk into that one.

In all seriousness though; have you not noticed that you're the ONLY one in this discussion clinging to one side of it.

Now I'm not one to blindly follow the majority, but when you're in an environment of (reasonably) free thinkers and they're all pretty much disagreeing with you, you surely have to question that rather than to just blindly fight on?
