If the government doesn’t pay for that basic research then it doesn’t get done. This is why we aren’t developing new antibiotics. The basic research is simply too expensive and time consuming for private industry to justify.

In a free market businesses act in the interest of their bottom line.
How is investing into new, unexplored (possibly useless) research in the interest of a business?

They don’t even WANT groundbreaking medicine to be discovered, if it makes one of their current products obsolete.

This selfishness in business doesn’t make these companies evil or anything...that’s just how you run a business🤷🏻‍♂️

Pharmaceutical companies products are almost entirely based on older drugs. They spend their time working off of a basic compound class, adding functional groups to see how that works etc: it’s guvetbmemt research that originally discovered the class of compounds that work in the first place.

Look at this list of the top selling drugs. See all the drugs that end with MAB? Those are monoclonal antibody drugs, a class of drug discovered at the Max Planck institute, an organization entirely funded by the German government.

Humira costs $5,000 for two doses

10. Xarelto (rivaroxaban)

9. Opdivo (nivolumab)

8. Eylea (aflibercept)

7. Avastin (bevacizumab

6. Herceptin (trastuzumab)

5. Enbrel (etanercept)

4. Keytruda (pembrolizumab)

3. Revlimid (lenalidomide)

2. Eliquis (apixaban)

1. Humira (adalimumab

just because the vovenment has done the reasearch doesnt mean it couldnt have been done by anyone else.

einstein wasnt revolutionary? he didnt introduce the world to his revolutionary ideas because a government told him to. what about apple or microsoft? wouldnt you say they did some revolutionary work?

the idea that it requires the government to come up with something totally new is ridiculous.

competition within markets is what often drives innovation. if someone is already doing something you have to find a better or cheaper way to compete.

by your logic, since the microscope was invested by a private individual therefore without the innovation from the private sector the government couldnt have known about microorganisms in order to start researching antibiotics.

Wars can be fought without Einstein’s nuke. Work can be computed without Gates’ PC. You cannot beat an infection without antibiotics.

Also, the microscope as we know it was funded by a gov grant, sorry.

“ English scientist Robert Hooke improved the microscope, too, and explored the structure of snowflakes, fleas, lice and plants. He coined the term "cell" from the Latin cella, which means "small room," because he compared the cells he saw in cork to the small rooms that monks lived in. In 1665, and detailed his observations in the book "Micrographia."

there is alot we couldnt do without einstein apple or microsofts work. and those are just a couple of examples. if you look back to the 18th and 19th centuries when gpd per capita really started shooting up and people started being lifted out of poverty at extreme rates who was creating all those revolutionary machines and products that literally brought about the future we know?

the government uses computers to do their research ergo they couldnt have done it without research and developement already conducted in the private sector according to koods.

his most innovative work was done before that and he did it outside of work while working at the patent office. you dont know what you're talking about.

now lets go back for a sec, should the private sector get the credit for discovering anti biotics because it couldnt have been done without a microscope which informed us of the very existance of microorganisms?

What things exactly couldnt we do before Apple and Microsoft? You do realize they didn’t invent computers, right? They took computers - a military-funded tech - and made a consumer-friendly version called a Personal Computer.

And if your neighbor (who got laid off from his job and lost his health insurance) comes down with the fucking plague, it is in society's best interest to cure him before everyone else gets sick.

This is not rocket science, it's common fucking sense.

they revolutionized the industry amd continue to do so to this day. and they have brought the price down and brought it to the public. If it were merely developed for the military things would have ended up differently. once again just because the government discovered something first doesnt discount everyrhing done in that industry by the private sector.

if you give all of apple and microsofts credit to the government then the private sector gets the credit for anti biotics for inventing the microscope and ultimately discovering the existance of microorganisms.

I'm not against funding research conducted for militaey purposes. military is a legitimate role of government.

Banana man is a radical individualist who was educated in a public school system no doubt, drives to work on publicly funded roads, is protected by publicly funded police and fire services, posts on the publicly funded internet and doesn’t worry about how he will pay when he gets sick because he lives in a country where healthcare is publicly funded. What a jerk
