Advice needed on mushroom capsule storage
    #26363921 - 12/05/19 09:24 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Hoping this post is in the right section, i just need some advice on how to best store my capsules / determine if i've already ruined them etc.

So around four months ago i ground up my mushrooms and put them into capsules. These were then stored in a box inside of a dark room.

I recently moved them (about a month a go) and put them into a cold room (which is at around zero degrees centigrade).

Now, i've read that ground up mushrooms will lose their potency much faster than whole dried out mushrooms (hence why i put them into cold storage). However, should they be in the freezer? If so - is it possible that they have already lost their potency?

I keep reading mixed things about capsule storage and previously i've only ever stored them in whole, dry form.

I’ve stored ground mushrooms mixed with tea powder for 2 years with minimal loss in potency. If you want them to last for many years, an airtight amber glass container filled with inert atmosphere (argon gas, etc) and placed in the freezer should do. If you take the container out of the freezer, wait for it to warm up to open it to prevent moisture from getting in.

Would the gel caps be ok in the freezer? i might consider doing this then.

As long as you minimize moisture exposure as much as possible you should be golden.

My capsules are in a dark place, in a glass air tight jar with a desiccant inside.

If you can vacuum seal them in a container and put them in a freezer, that’ll be your best bet but I have no problems so far with my storage (no loss of potency)

They’ve been stored for a couple of months but they will be used up soon. As above, freezer is the best bet for long term storage if you can.

I would avoid freezing gel caps. They might become brittle and fall apart when you thaw them. I think a cool, dark, dry place is the best place for capsuled shrooms. They should be fine as a powder, as long as the container is (mostly) air-tight. If the shrooms are dried properly, they should last for years.

Stored properly, the capsules themselves should perish long before the active material becomes degraded enough to make a difference. Because of this I don't think it's the best long term storage method but I'm sure many would disagree. Being inside the capsule the material should be relatively safe from oxidation, but if it's a concern I'd just put them all in a jar somewhere well stored.

An air tight Mason jar with two desiccant packs. That's how I store all of my mushrooms. Would work just as well for capsules.

Seal them in a mason jar and keep in a cool dark place, no fridge or freezer.
