Ideal time for dunking
    #2636385 - 05/04/04 11:43 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

My cake is 6x15x10 cm aprox, and first time i dunk i got excellent results. I kept it under water in the fridge for 22 hours

Not its the second time (preparing for the third flush)

How much time is best? Dont tell me something like 6-48 hours

is it like 24? 30? 36?

Ive never dunked more than 24 hours, never.I know a few people say they have, but I have also read in several places that 48 hours can kill the mycelluim.I dont have first hand experiance with this because as I said I never dunk longer than 24 hours, but I wouldnt chance it personally.
I usually dunk 12-18 hours first time, and 18-24 hours after each flush, depending on how big the flush was.I have always had great flushes with this and never had a reason to change.

Well i guess better safe than sorry.

But why less time in the second flush? because the cake is smaller?

sorry i meant the other way around.12-18 hours at birth and 18-24 between flushes.I didnt read what i wrote untill you responded.12-18 hours is plenty to rehydrate at birth since it hasnt lost alot of moisture yet and 18-24 is more than enough to rehydrate a  cake between flushes.sorry,it was early for me still,i was half asleep.I edited it.

ive dunked for longer and it doesnt always kill your mycelium but its definately not helping anymore past about 28 hours or so. stick to about 20-24 hours!

So, as soon as i see the first pin, dunk it for 12-18 hours?

and 20-24 after first flush?

As soon as you see the first pin?
No just do it when the whole cake is 100% colonized.you dont have to wait for pins, you wanna do it before your cake pins(although it wont hurt pins)because you want the moisture to already be there for the pins.
What I do is wait untill the cake is 100% colonized then from that point i wait 3 more days, because sometimes even though it looks 100% colonized its not in the middle yet,so the extra few days allows that to happen. Then I just dunk in about 10% H2O2 and 90% distilled water.
