Friends, first of all this is an amazing forum. I have eclectic interests and have flitted about many a corner of the Internet. And only maybe one other time have I seen a group similarly dedicated to actively sharing such immense and valuable knowledge.
Kudos.
So for my very first grow I will be going "all Bod" meaning:
- Jars inoculated w/ syringe (sorry, Bod, gotta draw the n00b line somewhere) using Easy AF Oat Prep TEK
- Spawned into coir prepped w/ Easy AF Bucket TEK
- Placed into growing conditions w/ Easy AF Unmodified Tub TEK
I've bought my grow kit, digital hygrometer (Chinese), automatic mister set to 3x/day, aquarium heater...
KIDDING. Jeez, don't get yer panties in a bunch.
Materials still incoming. Pics of setup and grow log to come.
So psyched! Jfaustus

OKAY! THAT WAS HILARIOUS!
But why, oh why!, are you going to inoculate jars with syringe? If you're following Bod's other TEK's (which I mostly do, too), why not follow the agar TEK first? It's fun and educational!

I hear you. Frankly it was because I was reading TEK after TEK and the agar one was where my brain went, "uh-uh, nope, done. too much information."
BUT very open to learning -- and better now than when I've fucked up a tub or two. So, on a scale of 1 to 5, how much harder is agar than inoculating jars w/ a syringe?

I don't really think harder or easier is the way to look at it. Clearly it is very easy to inject a jar with a syringe. I started growing with pf-tek so I did plenty of that, but you said you're using oats (which I do now). To be honest, I've never injected jars of oats with a syringe because I've read so very many posts explaining what a bad idea it is. The cost of some agar, malt extract, and a few petri dishes seems negligible when compared to the cost of wasted time if your jars are contaminated due to directly injecting spores via syringe. And really, the fun of seeing mycelium start growing on your dishes, and then making transfers and watching it grow and change is completely worth doing. The final product makes it even more worthy. Overall, it's pretty easy if you read a lot about using a still air box and follow the directions and use common sense.

In the long run working with agar is much easier because you wont be throwing away as many contaminated jars 😆

0. Agar is the easiest thing about mycology, considering it will bring you solid results with little guess work.
Bods oat prep tek is almost certainly too water heavy to accommodate spores. Believe me, I’ve tried it following his grain prep to a T and 13 out of 12 jars contaminated. Just not ideal for added spore solution.

Yep! That's what I was trying to say. I follow Bod's oat prep TEK to a T as well, but I only add agar wedges, not spore solution. And definitely remember this: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24126032

I sometimes prepare lots of grain a day ahead of time let it dry in the colander for a few hours then put it in the fridge overnight. It almost seems too dry, you can't get it too dry. If I have the time I vastly prefer to make the grain on the dry side.
Remember that last line: "It almost seems too dry, you can't get it too dry. If I have the time I vastly prefer to make the grain on the dry side."
Took me too long to realize this!

Agar can seem intimidating at first, but it really isn't hard at all once you start doing it. There will be a clunky phase at first , everyone goes through it but that'll pass very quick then you wont even consider doing it any other way.
The sooner you start agar the sooner youll get great at it , good luck

lmao
Also +1 to get on the agar train. I'm also just getting started (<2 months ahead of you) but let me tell you agar is the easiest part of the hobby: much easier to get right than jars or tubs. It's also super fun + you can store backup cultures in the fridge and restart whenever you want, if your grow fails.

Cooking some oats today. Going to use the water for agar later on. Cut (melted) holes for SAB last night.
Didn't have a larger coffee can handy so used a heated knife. That smelled good... The edges are a bit uneven so I plan to wear close-fitting sleeves when I use it to minimize snagging.
Pics coming later on.
