Breeding cubensis for cold resistance 1

Asking some of the more experienced cultivators on here for advice on an experiment of mine. One of the main advantages of wood loving species is that their mycelium can survive being frozen solid. I ask what the best route would be to attempt to create a strain of cubes that could withstand these conditions. This would be useful for a few reasons,
- Us northerners could easily grow cubes outdoors - Strains could easily be preserved indefinitely by putting spawn in the freezer - With some efforts we could expand cube's native range
In away we have been indirectly breeding cubes to be more contamination resistant I don't see why we couldn't do the same with temperature resistance

Knock up 50 jars with spores ..freeze them once colonized. Fruit them...clone any that fruited We haven't been breeding contans resistance, when our myc figures out a way contans mutate and we are back to square one

B+ is supposed to lean toward cold resistant. I'm certain the science is complex.
If the goal is a wild local population look into as close to local finds as possible.
I am honestly surprised there are no cold fruiting sclerotia forming varieties.

Banded mottlegill makes little blue pearls and is found pretty much worldwide, and that was my plans to just box a bunch of jars with me and see if any survive freeze

Could work but you’d be better off dropping the temp a little with each generation,
IE: knock up jars with spores and let them colonize at 65(currently accepted low end of possible) fruit those out and take spores, repeat, but drop the temp by 2.5 degrees, continue until your desired temps are reached and/or you cant get anything to fruit. Then raise by 1 degree and try again, if nothing else you’d find out what the lowest temp fruiting can be accomplished at, and you could possibly end up with cubes that do decently in the 60’s, anything below that would probably take years.
Nature has it limits but they definitely aren't hard and fast, and with enough generations and enough time just about anything is possible. Might take a while but if you believe in evolution you know much wilder things have happened due to selective pressures, hermaphrodism , chimerism, bioluminescence and all kind of other crazy stuff.

My first room wasn't insulated and I know it went to 60 at times. Its average was 66. The variety was b+ clone doing bods unmodified tubs. Full canopy but they were short with thick stocks. The second flush I got the temp better and got more normal fruits Curious what's the lowest temp you guys have successfully fruited.

68f was the lowest I got. I think it can be beneficial fruiting at that temp, heartier fruits and whatnot but that’s anecdotal.

I can attest that African Transkei is not cold resistant at all. Grows very slow in cold weather.
I think the easiest way would be to nocc up wither agar plates or PF Jars/grain jars with clean spores and then put them in cold temps, maybe just above freezing (milder version) and see if anything grows.

I've been thinking I will probably go with plates cause I can fit more in my fridge, it will be easier to observe the effects on the mycelium too. Gonna try them in the fridge first cause its adjustable temp. If any do well I colen them and try in the freezer

Hey bod, I can’t tell from the picture but do you case your too fruiting jars? If so with what? And then bag the top?
Your top fruits always look fat as hell and super healthy and I feel like anytime I top fruit a jar it doesn’t grow well, almost like I’m not coaxing enough mushroom out of the mycelium, due to moisture air flow heat etc

Been 40-45 in here when I wake up for days now and these Classics are doing just fine. B+ shoeboxes are thriving/knotting too... and my Fijis are having zero problems colonizing. Been 48-60 every night for weeks now... I was a bit concerned setting up a lab again in these temps but my fears have thus far been unfounded.

I think if Cubes were going to expand successfully into colder climates, it would have occured via the millions upon millions of gerations that wild fruit every year/natural expansion. I do believe that with climate change we'll see places in the SE (NC, VA, KY...), more parts of TX, etc. reporting finds in the not-so--distant future (along with woodlovers moving up here to AK/not just a couple unverifiable/antiquated claims). I like the spirit of this experiment either way, but doubt very seriously it will bear any fruit (pardon the pun).

It's not getting cubes to fruit in cold weather that would be the problem. In order to survive the year the spores will need to live through freezing

I could be wrong but I think the spores can survive freezing but the mycelium cannot

That is what I believed but someone here on the shroomery in another thread showed otherwise.
Nature is odd. Some annuals come up for years if winters are mild. Same with insects.
I believe it depends on how severe the winters are as to the survival rates.
