Have been eying those lately, really interesting design.
Makes me want to try building one, I have a normal tank drum with regular notes but I love the split note design on these.
Metal drums are a lot of fun for recording, I've been running my tank drum through all sorts of effects to get some very psychedelic sounds.
Do you have any mallets or anything? They are fun to play by hand but I found the tank drum was a bit rough to play loudly, would end up bruising my hand over time So I tried a few mallets and so far these work the best: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2Pcs-Bass-Drum-Mallet-Felt-Head-Percussion-Mallets-Timpani-Sticks-with-Stai-M6M6/123971781176?epid=13033766654&hash=item1cdd4b4238:g:SSMAAOSwAGxdyUJ~

Wooden mallets sound way to harsh on the metal, I tried softening a cheap pair of wooden ones by tying several layers of cloth around the tip. Worked better but still nowhere as smooth as those cloth mallets.
Makes it a lot easier to get loud clear notes, as well as play fast. Different mallets will also sound fairly distinct, some will be brighter or darker or smoother/harsher.
-------------------- Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

I just play it with my hands, some of the notes would be quite small to hit with a mallet I think.
The sustain is amazing (over 20 seconds) and the sound itself is very meditative.
I always wanted to learn an instrument. I tried an Ukelele but I just couldnt get my fingers to bend correctly.
This drum is great to just mess around with. It can be played very softly too, which is a big plus in our small appartment.
Quite stoked. It just looks good sitting on the cabinet

Happy birthday!!
That's a great instrument! I love these RAV's more then a Hang drum (handpan), because of the sustain and the very low maintenance. Hang drum almost needs to tune every year (depends on climate and how rough you handle it). The RAV keeps in tune forever!! What's the Key (toonsoort) of your instrument?
Btw I'm a guitarist and play since a year a percussion instrument, the darbuka!
Have fun with your RAV!! (I'm a little jealous haha)

If it has specific notes and you want to learn, just try to learn some scales and maybe how chords and progressions play together.
Also time signatures and stuff like syncopation. Inversions can take you a long way too, there some really interesting videos on classical theory on youtube

That's great! G Pygmy sounds very mystical. I bet it really resonates when you are on shrooms .
While the shrooms come up I always play guitar and its sounds wonderful! At the peak I can't concentrate and loose the ability to make music haha.
A Darbuka is an aluminium drum (or clay), more like a small Djembe. You play it on your lap with your fingers (Djembe you play with your hands). It's mostly played in eastern music (but also in Greece, Indonesia, North of Africa, Russia and so on), mine comes from Egypt. They really have a snappy high pitch sound and a deep short bass!

Tongue drums of various styles and types are fairly common among some of the more refined drum circles in town because of their unique reverberating tone and ability to create a variety of resonant frequencies. Lotta solid energy coming out of these. Who ever gifted you such a positive object must be a true friend. A gift like this is truly profound and treasured. I was once gifted one by my friends avacado and chips they created out of a recycled tire and reclaimed metals. Sadly I had to trade it for ketamine some days later so I never got to play it.

Conratulations Tripsurfer, and thats a VERY nice gift to be getting.
Just sitting at ease smoking weed and occasionally slamming an ambient note with the side of your thumb would be quite relaxing.
Even a Tibetan Singing Bowl would do that nicely (own one of those)

My mom has 2 huge quartz singing bowls as well as a smaller old brass one that is pretty beat up.
Been using them in recordings lately, the quartz bowls get crazy loud. The Bronze bowl I use more for cymbal like sounds since it is hard to get singing nicely with all the dents.
One thing I used to do with them is fill them with water before making them sing, you can see the vibrations on the waters surface and it looks really trippy:
