Articles on antifungal + antimicrobial herbs and spices (you heard me)

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/317635651_Antibacterial_and_Antifungal_Activities_of_Spices#pf35
- the above article contains research about pepper, cumin, cinnamon, for their antifungal and antimicrobial properties, the below is specifically in regards ginger:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6218584/
and this, about decoctions and their specific results (thyme and oregano) as contam inhibitors (cough cough, applause):
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s002170000249
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/317635651_Antibacterial_and_Antifungal_Activities_of_Spices#pf35 (This is a remarkable read worth the time for the careful grower)
Look at the chart listing the 100% efficacy of Thyme and almost 100% efficacy of oregano in the research article. It also lists the method of preparing the decoction (basically boiling the herb in water and adding that at 5% or 10% to the 250 ml Agar solution: however I'm definitely NOT sure how much plant material was used in making their decoction, nor do they list it, but the table showing the results is very very interesting...

Cinnamon: "Mvuemba et al. [74] evaluated the inhibitory effects of aqueous extracts of four spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and horseradish) on the growth of mycelial of various spoilage pathogens (A. niger, Fusarium sambucinum (F. sambucinum), Pythium sulcatum (P. sulcatum), and Rhizopus stolonifera (R. stolonifera)). At the concentration of 0.05 g/mL, cinnamon extract totally inhibited A. niger and P. sulcatum, while at the level of 0.10 and 0.15 g/mL F. sambucinum and R. stolonifer were completely inhibited, respectively."
Oregano: Ozcan et al. [39] investigated the antifungal activities of four spice decoctions against six molds (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli, Macrophomina phaseoli (M. phaseoli), Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea), Rhizoctonia solani (R. solani), Alternaria solani (A. solani), and Alternaria parasiticus (A. parasiticus)). The results showed that the mycelial growth were 100% inhibited by 10% oregano decoction in culture medium
A quote or two from: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/317635651_Antibacterial_and_Antifungal_Activities_of_Spices#pf35%C2%A0
You could also make this aqeuous extract and use it to mist away any contams, haha!

Cool I'm gonna have to give this a read. Maybe we can cook some contamination resistant spawn up

Coconut oil is also antimicrobial. There are many research papers about coconut oil killing ecoli, staphs, hepatitis viruses after exposure....also general antimicrobial properties showing some potential medical applications. It has a long history of homeopathic use. I don't know how far this all extends - or if it could have any implications for mycology

I tried making agar using Earl grey tea as nutes. Nothing grew in any of them. Pretty sure something in there is antifungal. Oops.

well I would like to try different ratios of cinnamon because by info on some of those articles, cinnamon thyme and oregano will pretty much destroy any of the regular contams.
It would be awesome to get the perfect ratio that allows the growing of cubensis mycelium while snuffing out the competition. In fact I am setting up some experiments in that regard...
it should be interesting if someone here who already has some live mycelium can actually try like a very light 10% cinnamon-tea dilute for their agar liquid recipe and test the cubensis mycelium...

But it can only inhibit germination. The moment you put it to grain it will simply thrive thus my comment of inhibitors not always a good solution. When we use agar the goal is to be able to see the contaminates not to hide them.

Herbs and slices are not very broad antimicrobials even when they're called broad it's not broad enough for microbiology work.
Also people magically think that mushrooms mycelium are not microorganisms because of the fruit body. and that these compounds know what humans think are good and bad and weed em out accordingly.
Anything that slows down or weakens the growth of your mushroom mycelium is only weakening and slowing down something that already grows faster anyway. Agar is a tool for getting clean mycelium. Seeing contamination is Paramount to that job.

This is very insightful thank you. I am aware that higher fungi (that have fruitbodies) are a microorganism. My hope had been that at least there is some type of compound that reality destroys lower fungi but not higher fungi. I mean such a compound would be of great value, but I see now the need and value of being able to visually remove contams using agar. But what do you think of that concept: if there is some compound that selectively weeds out lower vs higher fungi, based on some type of genetic trait that make lower fungi more susceptible.
However I see now after your explenation why agar is used... I had always tried to avoid it because I Cannot get petri dishes in my country without being 500, so have actually been looking for alternatives to getting things growing for years.. I mean like since 2006 already, laal.
But, I don't know if my point is appreciated. I really was hopng the spices would cull lower fungi, and that higher fungi, although similarly a microfungus, have some type of genetic edge over their lower fungi competitor in this regard... It is an interesting distinction... but may be irrelevant in assuming that just because they're higher fungi there would be some compound that they, unlike lower fungi, are able to sustain without dying off.

Just use plastic Tupperware instead of buying Petri dishes. Almost all Tupperware works, I like using the ziploc twist n' seal but anything labeled pp5 will work.

You can use anything labeled pp5, or you can even use small mason jars. Hard to believe that you haven't realized this after 14 years of searching.
Maybe there is some way to implement these herbs in mushroom cultivation, but they won't really help you to get clean spawn.

Sounds like you can not get petris, and therefore have been looking for an alternative way of growing for 14 years. What did I assume?
The gorilla was referring to the fact that you replied after a month and a half of this thread being dead. Kind of a "my face when" thing...
Chill out, lol. Im not attacking you.

I have zero funds. Im waiting for my bursary at uni. the bureaucrats haven't even coughed that up and its paltry, too. My life is screwed but hopefully some mushies will help.
And tbh I will not be doing anything experimental I think I'll follow the book this time to ensure a crop.
I'll do an experiment on the side to check, and using a nastily contammed lc... expect failure on my asterile cinnamon grow. but I will go through the motions of testing it still.
