What path should I take?
    #26360361 - 12/04/19 03:11 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

I am soon to be kicked out of australia. I am absolutely devastated by this.

I was living in america making 7.35 an hour working multiple jobs only getting 30 hours a week in total. Fighting for every hour of work. I had no healthcare and ended up needing to be admitted to an emergency room for a surgery. I had a few other healthcare related things. Ended up losing my jobs and flipping things on craigslist to survive. I barely skated by above homelessness for a good year or so. Finally I took everything... sold it.... and flew to australia with nearly no money to my name.

I got a job within a week or 2. Instantly started making 60k a year. I'm currently making substantially more than that. And I have 2 months left of my visa now.

I have 5 options.

Option 1: Falsely apply for my next visa. This will guarantee I get a few more months work (up to a max of around 6 months). But eventually they will decline me and kick me from country. It will also make me ineligible to apply for any other visas in future.

Option 2: Move to a major city in Australia and go to college. This will mean I have to spend every penny I have on a degree since I wont be able to work more than 20 hours a week legally. Additionally I have a girl there who would be up for marrying me but I am not in love with her. I would have to live with her for a year to apply for a marriage visa and then I would have to stay with her for 3 to 4 years to become a permanent resident. I would likely get her pregnant or become complacent and being with her would become my life.

Option 3: Move to New Zealand. In New Zealand I can only work for 1 year and the pay is around 25 percent less than Australia and I hear it is hard to find work there. After a year I would have to leave.

Option 4: Move to some other country that also pays high.

Option 5: Move to America and find a location that I can make a living in. Currently I am considering Alaska. The pay seems higher than other states and I could live in a Van making me earn more money.

Can you expand on how you are using the word security.? Are you providing protection of a place or person(s) from physical harm/disturbance? To me security and social worker are dissimilar jobs from what little I know about these careers first hand.

A social worker works in the hospital managing insurance and placement of patients to various secondary health care facilities such as rehabs, physical therapy etc.

One of my siblings does social work, whereby she keeps track of families who have had a myriad of issues, whether that may include drug addiction or domestic abuse or any other such problem that can create a hostile environment for children.  This includes maintaining regular contact with the families and visiting their homes to make sure that the environment is safe for the children who live there.  I could consider this "security" for the children, since it encourages the family unit to stay together, in a healthy way, and if that can't happen, the children are taken into foster care until the parents can get their shit together.

No idea if this is the kind of work Oldnameforgotten handled, but figured I'd chime in since it is an aspect of social work that is very different than managing insurance or placing people into various facilities.

To the original poster, that's a tough deal you got there.  I'd probably skip option 1, since you seem to like Australia and burning your bridge to visit again in the future seems unwise.

Option 2 seems palatable, although I'm not sure about the subtext regarding marrying a girl that you're not in love with.  If you can get her to agree to it as a "business transaction" so that she fully understands your lack of emotional commitment, I would endorse that... but from what you wrote it sounds like she's looking for more, and I wouldn't recommend leading her on that way.  At the very least, being in school and working part time could buy you some time to figure out another option, maybe meet someone you would actually want to marry?

Option 3 sounds great as a short term fix, so long as you're comfortable remaining a nomad along with the possibly of adjusting your lifestyle significantly.  My wife spent some months in New Zealand and had nothing but good stuff to say.  Of course, the issues surrounding work may make this option a volatile choice, and you'll always have the looming deadline of having to eventually leave that country as well.

Option 4 is too vague to give any thoughts on and Option 5 sounds like an easy greenlight given that you are presumably an American citizen already and could qualify for various state & federal aid with regard to healthcare, at least until you found a suitable employment option.  Choosing where you go in the States will be the tricky part no doubt... some areas are just too expensive, but you need to balance that with other areas that are cheap because there may not be much opportunity for work.

Best of luck, and let us know how it all unfolds!

I work with at risk indigenous youths in the middle of nowhere. So some are aggressive... some are a year off coming of age and risk of going to prison... some have drug / alcohol problems... some have terrible parents and I make sure if they go back to their parents that they arent being abused. Its a pretty wild job.
