Illegal logging * 1
    #26328041 - 11/18/19 02:31 AM (4 years, 4 months ago)

Hello, I don't know if I'm posting this in the right topic but I really wanted to share this little news story with you

There's been a lot of illegal loggin activity going on in my country which is home to a huge part of europe's wildlife and the fact that this has so far not gotten any exposure drives me mad. We're talking about people who are fucking up entire ecosystems for cheap mass produced furniture with zero fucks given in places which are supposed to be totally protected national parks (even taking a fallen branch out of this type of "protected" areas is supposed to be prohibited) with the help of corrupt politicians and "Romsilva" employees(romsilva is the state company that deals with most things forest related in romania).

The worst part of it is that most of these activities are not even the "stealthy" kind where they deforest until a ranger shows up and then run away. Foresters are now literally scared of going into the woods because lately there's been quite a violent turn of events. There has been an alarming number of foresters either straight up killed or badly injured and the most maddening part about this is that last february a law passed that basically prohibits foresters to carry firearms with them making self defense in all of these cases completely impossible.  carrying a firearm is a must in some of these places since we are talking about forests that are housing a huge percentage of europe's bear and wolf population.

There's a Netflix documentary about all this in the making called "Broken" which will air on 27 november and while the filming crew was
working on it they were attacked by members of an illegal logging company who  recognised a local activist that helped the crew document everything. These guys literally cut huge trees in the front and back of the crew's cars while on the forest road to block them and then tried crushing their vehicles by felling other trees that were on the side of the road. Luckily the crew escaped unharmed however such actions should not go unpunished. This netflix documentary is the first attempt at exposing what has been going in in my country for such a long time to a broad, global audience so hopefully the situation will get better

I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on this subject.

The trailer doesn't even mention what you are referring to:

I believe they're gonna have only one episode to cover what i was talking about and the attack on the filming crew happened very recently. Everything i know about the filming crew incident is from this article https://www.romania-insider.com/romania-netflix-documentary-illegal-logging

I think that the fact that one episode in a netflix documentary series can be considered the biggest exposure this subject ever got shows how hidden these things are from the general public

That's really sad and fucked up. It does happen, old trees are very valuable and if you can do it illegally, you make huge profits.

However, its illegal and of course immoral to cut down old growth trees.

In Africa, theres anti-guerilla groups, basically civilian military, that goes out and tracks down illegal poachers. Perhaps someday there will be a similar group to protect the forest.

Ya, that does suck.  Is the Government doing anything, or do you think they're on the side of the loggers?

Overall the political system is so corrupted and incompetent that I honestly don't know how the rest of the EU can take it seriously. There's lots of people occupying high positions that either use the power in all the wrong ways or simply have no idea what they are doing.

You would expect a minister of healthcare to be a doctor or a minister of agriculture to actually have experience in the field, however there's lots of ministers that are 100% parallel to their field of work who get to occupy those positions because they know X Y or Z person who is in an extremely high influencing position.

We have an extremely high funded anti terrorist and organized crime institution (DIICOT) whose biggest achievements in a long timespan are busting kids for for selling quantities of weed so low that the news reports on them can make you laugh.

I like to believe that there really is a reason why for the vast majority of this country's citizens the biggest achievement is to leave the country

I've heard many stories of the enviornmental guard not being able to stop logging activities simply because the wheels of bureaucracy were delayed when really there was no reason to delay. Also I believe that the prohibition of foresters carrying firearms happening shortly before so many of them either got severely hurt or killed is not a coincidence.

There is hardly any forest in Ohio anymore.  It used to be almost entirely forest and swamps.  They said a squirrel could jump from tree to tree, from the Ohio river to Lake Erie...without ever touching the ground.

Now it's mostly farm land and cookie cutter houses.  What little bit of forest remains is used for hunting.  As if the entire purpose of Earth is for human pleasures.

If people were smart, perhaps I'd think they were more worthy.  But people are stupid and egotistical high functioning retards.

The show released a few days ago so i thought i'd make a small update
The things I was talking about are covered in the third episode and the series overall gives quite a bit of insight about how consumerism fucks up the world in so many ways
If watching series on netflix is a usual way of spending your time I recommend switching the usual ones for this documentary
