eatyualive said: Hey bigsur, several years ago I picked up this organic compost at Home Depot. It had similar results. To be honest, I donβt remember the price but it was fairly cheapβ looked at it 2$ for a huge bag. I picked it up to try it out. So just to add that this can also work. I also use a lizard screen cage to quickly filter the rocks and sticks out of it.

Thought you might be interested and love the thread.
I did try another compost/ manure, timberline was the brand if I remember correctly. It worked, but not great, and had lots of sand in it. Nothing like the kow. It bums me out that its not the same across the country, Its always been great here. Wish I had some.

Aside from it being crazy expensive, I'm surprised no one has considered sending themselves some elephant or gorilla poo via https://www.poopsenders.com/.

Left to right: BK ONLY, 50/50 BK/COIR, COIR ONLY
As you can see, the mix is outperforming the other 2, with BK only slightly behind it, and coir only just starting to knot with some very tiny pins starting to push through... the other 2 (with bk) started knotting 4 days ago, day 2 pinning today... found it interesting: same BK, same batch of coir, same bag of grain split 3 ways

Coir only on top, BK only on the bottom, mix is center... each with 1qt from the same bag, harvested BK and mix boxes 2days ago and pulled them from the dehydrator yesterday at 23g and 29g respectively, and the coir only box might finish today... moisture content more than likely the culprit for lower yield in the bk only box, but still not bad for set and forget... my cultures love this shit (literally)

I know this thread has been quiet for a while but I just recently found some BK by me and am running a side by side trial against straight coir...
This is only 3 days after spawning... look at the BK go!

Correct. Well... I throw my coir in a Dutch oven and throw boiling water on it... i dont think its proper pasteurization... but the black kow was straight out of the bag.

If your Dutch oven keeps heat well your coir may well Be pasteurized. I used a probe thermometer in a few of my last buckets of coir and they reached 160 for over 3 hrs. Dropped down to 130 right around the 4 hr mark. And the BK is totally non-heat treated?

Does manure generally colonize quicker or is this just something with black kow?

Its fully possible... and yes, the BK was straight from the bag. It seemed a little wet to me but I ran with it...
