Harvesting technique?
    #26361353 - 12/04/19 04:11 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

When harvesting, is it okay to pick from the substrate? Or will this cause damage? Or do I need to use some sort of utensil?

Also, since I got an uneven pinset with uneven growth, some are more ahead than others. Is it okay to selectively pick the matured ones and wait for the others to grow and mature some more before I harvest those? Or everything must come off at once?

Twist and pull gently m8. Make it a quick but ginger pull, with more twist. That's how I do it every time

If you rip up the myc too badly you'll risk trich. It happens to me a lot because I sterilize my coir

So should I not do it like that then? It sounds like you're saying you can get trich...

I cut everything as close to the substrate as possible with a sharp blade.  The stumps were covered in myc again within a few days.  I know some people choose to twist and pull but I wanted to keep exposed grain to a minimum.

I let the more mature fruits go for as long as I could then cut them  without damaging anything nearby.  Seemed to work alright for me but they were my first few tubs.

If you're expecting multiple flushes cutting is clean and quick. If it's not gonna make it I would pluck and scrape for max yield. That said, if your sub is healthy it should flush again regardless.

So I can be selective and take the mature ones first and then harvest the others in a couple days time when grown a bit more?

After everything is harvested I plan to dunk the tub for a second flush.

I got trich cause my stuff is sterilized. Not pasteurized. Maybe cut close to the cake like this guy said.

Ur getting trich most likely because ur spawn, steralized/pasturized dont matter with coir.

Just grab twist n pull, harvest them as there ready no needto harvest all at once if you dont want to, if it tears up the sub a bit itl be fine aslong as ur spawns clean:cheers:

It really depends on the situation. Personally I don't like cutting. It severs the cell walls exposing life sugars to bacteria, virus, and other fungi causing an immune response which takes time/energy. Tearing causes cells to separate at their bonds but leaves them whole allowing for new growth without interruption. Sometimes Trich is an issue after plucking but the threat can be reduced by letting the colony recover for 24-48 hours before any new moisture is applied (soak, mist, etc). Most instructions in most "tek's" call for an immediate dunk. Generally healthy mycelium has no trouble making new pins in short order.

Just let the fuzz grow back before you get it wet again and the green is less likely.

Push down, twist, pull.  If it doesn’t easily come free, twist more.
Trich right after a dunk especially your first dunk is due to sudden favorable conditions for trich already in your substrate from your spawn.

I do it Bod's way, which is to fill up the tub with water, so the sub floats to the very top.  I currently use an xacto to harvest as close to the sub as possible, looking to get a larger, sharper knife like some on here have.  I'd like to be able to slice through that stuff like a samurai, make quick work of it.

I do shoeboxes and it gets to be a PITA trying to slice and dice 20 boxes before going to sleep for work the next day.  On a side note, I'm switching to monos here soon.

I’ve noticed certain kinds are easier. The Mazatapec I’ve done generally pop off pretty clean just from twist and pull, but the golden teachers will leave huge craters. I always have to scalpel them especially since they seem to like big clusters. When I have those I’ll lightly pull up on the cluster then put the blade at or a hair below surface level and cut across. Usually end up with like a two square inch base with a bunch of shrooms popping off it.

When you get a canopy cutting is the only way you will destroy the sub trying to twist n pull a full box of RW. If it's just some fruits here and there pluck them tho. Hell pluck a few and cut a few then decide for yourself.

So when I harvest, can I take every little thing off? Or do I need to leave the next flush pins on there? Right now I can't make the difference between the next flush pins and immature fruits, so I would rather just clean the whole block because it has a bunch of side pins also. If I clean the whole block it should pin again regardless after a soak correct?

And what about the bluing? After dunking the block for several hours and rehydrating, will my bluing go away?

Not that I’ve seen but new pins just pop through the old blue myc on mine.
