How To Clone Salvia Using Water * 3
    #26361371 - 12/04/19 04:19 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Here's a very basic guide to clone Salvia divinorum cuttings in nothing but water.

Your mileage may vary and it may take you a few trys to figure things out. Never give up!

My mother plant is already hardened off and it grows outdoors. If you grow yours inside or in a tent under lights then you want to put the cuttings, once in water, back into a similar environment. Just with lower light.

I take my cuttings at the start of the growing season and use cuttings roughly 6-12 inches (15-30cm) long. I make a 45 degree cut just below a node and strip off the lower leaves, they'll rot in the water otherwise. You can also reduce the leaf area by 50% if you wish.

I take a tall glass and fill with enough water to cover about 2 inches of the base of the stem. Tall glasses you can slide the cuttings down into and the rim of the glass supports the top of the plant. I find this stops them from wilting and bending over. The tallness also supplies some humidity.

I use water straight from the tap. You can use bottled water or rain water if your water isn't suitable. Don't use distilled.

Should look like this:

I put this glass in lower light than normal. About 30 cm from the window indoors. Over the next week or so some of the leaves will brown and drop off. This is normal and it will recover once rooted. Remove any dead leaves and change the water out every few days, or top it up. Remove any debris from the water as well.

In about 2 weeks you will see the start of some roots.

At this stage you can pot them up into soil or wait a few more days. I tend to pot into a 50/50 mix of potting soil and perlite.

Like so:

Keep the plant in lower light until you start to see new growth. The plants may wilt for a few days as the roots establish. Deep watering once a day will help. Water until it runs out the bottom of the pot. This should encourage the roots.

Once they perk up you can begin acclimatising your new plant. As it gets used to its environment it should begin to grow foliage that isn't Brown or deformed.

Nice tek

It's true.. it's incredible how long this plant can go on nothing but water, i think maybe it adapted to be able to use water vapor very well?

I would remove more leaves or cut half of some leaves off with scissors.. and also refresh the water more often?
15 cm is good, but i wouldn't go much larger IME. Be minimalistic otherwise too much energy needs to be spent on upkeep in the plant.

Idk where you got the black spots but either way it should be possible sooner than 2 weeks. Various contams, most easily bacteria can inhibit root formation. I'm confident they will inhibit even before you will start noticing very visibly and get issues on your plant or roots if already rooted, and bacterial biofilm.

Black spots are not necessarily an infection afaik esp not when its just leaf dying back for some reason.. but yours on the stem might contribute to difficulties.

Plus there are some big dislikes of Salvia and i believe one of them is excessive water evaporation. You are better off keeping your container closed and it will just have the air refreshed when you refresh the water (and rinse off the submerged parts from bacterial film which feels more or less slick).
Of course when rooted it can handle these things better. But when rooting even though you may not like humidity domes IME meaning in my conditions its pretty good to have a closed container that gets humid, and you can even submerge half the plant including leaves and it doesn't seem to mind.

Don't underestimate how water-loving this plant is. I don't quite understand what people are talking about when they say careful about overwatering. I used to water like there's no tomorrow in a previous home with good air conditions and my plants flourished like weeds at zero effort.

It's not dabbing it just seems that way.

Hey turtle. Nice to see you around and still giving the cat a good old shake.

You've made quality posts over the years. There was a time when I did the same.

Salvia's a good plant to have around. It doesn't feel right not having one. I've become attached to them.

Nice Karode

I will try this with some cuttings.
Does it matter that is winter now?
I have the Salvias inside under lights.

Salvia does okay with limited lighting, like in the windowsill but not some super weak lamp.

It also doesn't need to be very warm per se, but i would avoid draughty and desiccating air. Other than that if its a bit warm inside it is not necessarily registering as winter to the plant.

So in short: i think you should be fine. Mine just dont grow all that fast rn but they grow.

If they're still actively growing then I would try it out. I tend to do my cuttings at the start of the warmer months, as it awakens from Winter. My mother is outdoors year round and I've found I have high success at this time of year.

Report back with results. Good luck!
