Unmodified shoebox

After reading through a few teks mixing spawn/coir do I leave the lid on? Shoeboxes have airtight latch but I though it needs FAE for pinning?

Shoeboxes shouldn’t be air tight unless they have a gasket. U can leave them shut all the way to harvest if u want. I like to dub tub once mostly colonized so I can watch them grow and provide better FAE

needs gas exchange (GE) not fresh air exchange (fae) while colonizing and vice versa when initiating pinning/fruiting. Most teks say to put into fruiting asap. this is all new to me as well since ive been following 5+ year old procedure as well

Yes but how do I achieve GE with the latched lids? Should I drill a couple 1/4 holes in the lid with polyfill?

i am experimenting as we speak. i have dubbed my 16qt box (3 days ago) and we are at 50% already. TC is my flavor. what are you getting to grow? also, i would look A LOT more into these teks. your modifications will depend largely on your ambient situation (fans, humidty temp etc) and youll have to modify from there. RN, i have a positive pressure chamber built that keeps everything at a perfect 78 deg and constant FAE. Id dub it and pore tape the two together with a single strip going around the rolled edges to keep them together. tape doesnt need to be perfect just keep em together square on, not tilted or cocked

I’m using bods easy af shoebox tek, I don’t have time to mess with it much, no fan, mist once or twice a week, just put a bag over it done.

The thing is this batch is MS from left over agar from transfers and grains that didn’t make the cut for G2G so I’m not expecting much. Is there much difference from putting it in fruiting conditions from the start?

yes. for one you have much more airflow than youd have if you snapped the lid shut. Also, i wouldnt completely discount the MS agar youve got going. sometimes giants sleep.

I don't put them in monos thou. I either just leave the lids on or dub them.

Just let the stems bend, they won’t be perfectly straight but it doesn’t matter.

looks good! i prefer the canopy/unobstructed grow so hopefully mine dont get this way. im in the middle of switching shoesboxes ATM. Also, i was not trying to tell the OP that you HAVE to do dubs, its just my own personal preference. youve got extra room in there and air. call me autistic but it sounds good!

What’s your best suggestion for a bulk substrate recipe?

Don’t get me wrong I prefer to dubtub because I like to watch them grow. I was just showing that it’s not completely necessary. I normally wait for colonization before I dubtub because I can stack them to save space.

I like to use the classic coir bucket Tek. 1 brick of coir 2quarts of vermiculite and I like to use 3.5qts of water instead of 4. This is enough for 4 shoeboxes at a 1:2 ratio spawn to substrate.

I started out dubbing shoeboxes but it’s way easier to just put the lid on. I haven’t noticed any difference other than them being much easier to handle and stack.
If you’re using the normal 1.00 shoeboxes the lid won’t be airtight.
I also started off wrapping with foil for like 5 days to colonize then fruiting but now I just put an extra layer of coir on at spawn and go right to fruiting. No noticeable difference.

Do you float your tubs in between flushes?

I’ve only done a handful of grows but yes I do now. My first couple I just sprayed down with the mister til they were pretty soaked and it seemed to work fine.
Then I got a third flush off my very first one and it had shrunk a lot so I soaked it for a couple hours not expecting much from it after three flushes, and two days later it was popping pins out all over so now I soak them.

My two first tubs died after I tried floating them with my tap water.. I’m pretty sure there was/is something in my tap water.. I now only mist and use bottled water for my tubs because coming back to see the tubs dead was a sad sight..

Did you toss them? I had a couple I thought were dead but they came back to life after a couple days. I have such horrible tap water there’s no way I could use it. I had a friend get kidney stones from drinking it and he was in his 20s.
