Gentrification...... Seattle.... and beyond

Its disgusting, I have seen my city change, so much and so quickly.....
Now its to the point where its so in my face idk how much longer I can put up with it
When I first came here at 18, it was a bustling place for NORMAL PEOPLE.
Average people lived here, It wasn't just Amazon, Microsoft, Google executives and the second class that cooks, guards, takes care of, and cleans up after them....
Im so sick of these fucking people, its like most of them have totally forgotten what being a normal person is like.
My first apartment here was a 2 bedroom on capitol hill for 1200!!!!
That same apartment would be 2200+ now Those new luxury hi rises they are putting up everywhere.... They fucking sit vacant while they try to find someone who will pay
2500-6000$!!!!!!!!!! A FUCKING MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for a FUCKING 2 BEDROOM!!!!!!!!!!!! What NORMAL PERSON CAN FUCKING AFFORD THAT??????
The sad thing is... This is fucking happening everywhere.....
And it really sucks cause I still have so much love for this place.
Seattle, more than anything else, taught me how to be a man.
And I just know soon, im probably going to have to leave unless I want to work 2-3 jobs to pay for an apartment im never fucking at.
Its the new fucking San Francisco.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MY DAD WORKS FOR MICROSOFT
I over heard these people walking home the other night saying... (In the most snooty voice you could imagine)
"WEEEE JUST GOT IN FROM NANTUCKET" FUCK YOU go back to Bellevue asshole
I used to see these sackless dipshits come into the restaurant I was working at with their 2000$ escorts.
FUCKKKKKK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
One day... all these big tech jobs are going to be taken over by AI then, we will all be fighting over bullshit jobs just to buy food
Amazon/Seattle hunger games (2026)

It’s funny, when I was in Denver back in September I definitely felt a ton of prejudice and anger directed at me because I kind of look the part of a tech-type person. I understood why. These people lost their city and cost of living skyrocketed.
I think that people underestimate how bad it is that we have this tech class in contrast to a service economy with disenfranchised ppl. It sort of sets the stage for class tension. Though, arguably, anger at tech is misdirected. Banking, etc. are much more nefarious and predatory.

Gentrification is a good thing. Why would you want your city to be a shit-hole forever.
Things are getting more expensive because we are over-populated and have finite resources. I don't see that changing so you might want to just start making more money please.

yah damn those pesky developers for spending a bunch of money to make shit nice. philly is largely a shithole and have you ever talked to ppl that lived in like Harlem or the bronx in the 70s? the brox was lit a smoldering ruin. people talk about it like they lived in a fucking warzone. I had one old head tell me thst the drug scene in Hartford was like the Bronx in the 70s. which is kinda true I mean insanely strong cheap dope and open air drug markets where crowds of dealers run up to your car. have fun with that

America is amping up for war and hard times.
Sometimes that means building massive structures and taking over small towns on key routes with new growth and infrastructure./
And in the places off the grid, all of the unknown sightings are growing more common.
I'd say that I need to practice camping and outdoor skills more.
My knife throwing, sharpening, spear fishing, and fire making are getting slower with time.
But all of those skills will mean nothing much when humans turn on humans, leaving only the generational fallout of war and death.

People here defending gentrification are full of shit. What good is it for a city to be “nice” if you’re priced out of it?
The tech industry claims to be liberal but they’re the greatest segregationists in post Jim Crow America. Racist whites in the Deep South look at Silicon Valley in awe. Shit, they’re even driving the blacks out of Oakland, the birth place of the Black Panthers.
The tech industry has failed in their responsibility to the communities they migrated to but they could still make partial amends. They need to provide free and very low cost and rent controlled housing to the local people who created the culture they wanted to live in. They also need to use their influence to see to it that the workers in the service industry built around the tech industry receive living wages and have access to affordable and comprehensive health care.
The tech industry talks a good game but when you get down to it they’re just another good ole boy network.

The question in my mind is why can't someone build an apartment building and charge a 1000 per unit rent, 10 units a floor, 20 floors. That's 200 hundred grand a month, how is it that is not profitable? Even after hiring a super and maintenance guy. What cost am i not factoring in? A city with a 0.05% vacancy rate should be have developers jumping at the chance. I can only think the property taxes must be prohibitive or something.
No one is building is apartments anywhere it seems, in my city it has been one new (luxury) apartment building in a decade, all new rental units are either basement apartments or the above mentioned 2500 dollar condo rentals. I am under some kind of rent control they can only raise it a small amount every lease, like this year it went up ten bucks a month, I signed during a big recession.

I live in Pittsburgh. We are going through much of the same gentrification as many cities, though probably to a lesser degree. There is plenty of decent affordable housing stock here. You can buy a home for $80k. But, that won't get you close to a trendy neighborhood or very near the city core. So if you are a bus commuter it's not ideal, but it is doable. I live in the city, I can see the central business district from my yard. I paid $170k for my home. The apartment I lived in before hand was $1k a month, two bedrooms, in a trendy neighborhood, with an outdoor space. The place was great, but needed work. The owner decided to sell it, the building sold for $370k on cash sale. Houses in that same neighborhood generally go for $300k and up. Nice houses are $500k. At the Google Campus, studio apartments go for $2k a month. That's the same as downtown. That's also twice my mortgage payment, and I have three bedrooms, an office, and a detached two car garage. We were forced to move out of the trendy neighborhood and decided to buy in a less desirable but still good neighborhood. The kind of hilarious thing about it is that I lived in the trendy neighborhood for a decade, I moved in when it was less desirable. I watched the artists and musicians take over the place, I watched the local scene blow up, the bars were fun, the parties were great, then the area was recognized for being cool all of a sudden. That's when all the middle age rich people moved in. You go there now, it's all these rich professionals role playing as hipsters. The artists and musicians moved on five years ago when they were priced out.
Gentrification is indeed a bitch.

Yep. No joke Nirvana’s biggest legacy may be the gentrification of Seattle.

You're priced out for some reason, I' m not and I do blue collar work with a lot of disposable income. Tech companies have no responsibility to fail at. They are here for work, not the culture. You're just poor and instead of getting a decent job you find a scapegoat. How about you use your wages to give free housing to strangers?
Black people are not being driven out of Oakland at all.

Philly is the next east coast city that will be heavily gentrified, seriously..... withing the next 10 years.. If I can buy up some property I might do really well when whitey decides to take it back..... JUST LIKE with NYC
But right now, the rents are very affordable for a young aspiring chef like myself....
