Golden Teacher Grow Log - Organic Rye Grain & Coco Coir
#26343598 - 11/24/19 11:15 PM (4 years, 2 months ago) |

I recently cased about 8 qrts of fully colonized rye grain with hydrated coco coir in a medium sized black tub. First, I applied a generously thick layer of coco coir at the bottom and around the sides, then I filled with crumbled cakes of rye grain, inoculated with golden teacher sub-strain, I then cover with a generous half inch layer of coco coir. I then covered with a sheet of plastic wrap then heavy duty aluminum foil to protect the interior contents from having abundant contact with the exterior environment.
This was 2 days ago, so my question is, how much time before I should unveil it and place it in the fruiting chamber and is there anything problematic in my method so far?
Everything looks and feels right but I’m no expert. I’ll post some pics when it starts pinning if anyone is interested.
Thanks for the help.

That’s a lot of spawn for 1 tray. Most mix there’s spawn throughout the substrate then put a layer on top but you will probably still have some luck. I would take the foil off because mycelium loves light. If your going to let it colonize before you put it in the fruiting chamber then I’d just put clear plastic wrap with a few small holes so the mycelium can still breath. Or cut a slit in the plastic wrap and cover with micropore tape. What kind of fruiting chamber do you plan to use?

My fruiting chamber is going to be a plastic storage tub with many small holes drilled in the sides with wet perlite at the bottom to keep humidity up. Thats the plan anyways, i’m still thinking it through.
Thanks for the insight, Ill remove the foil today.

So, mycelium is growing strong, but tiny patches of coco coir casing is drying out just a touch, will that negatively effect the growing/fruiting ?

I’d give it a light mist and get ready for some pins. Don’t over mist it though, it will get all matted and not produce as well.

No need to make an SGFC if you can find a tote about the same size as the tray. Just slide it in and you got yourself a monotub.

Looks good. I agree with others on misting it. A nice indirect spray or two to will do. Nice to see some high quality pictures for once too.

Thanks for the comments. This morning a small area looks to be turning green/blue. I suspect it's either trich mold or psilocybin bluing.
I have pictures showing 2 of the same set of images, one set has saturation turned up to dramatize the coloring, the other is how it really looks. Any suggestions on what I should do about it, if it is problematic.

That looks like bruising. It looks good except it needs a mist so there’s little beads of water stuck to the all the myc poking through.

Trich will first appear as a blotch of blindingly white, solid-looking mold. Then it releases green spores and looks “puffy”. That spot is bruised

thanks for the info! I appreciate knowing that.

I got a spray bottle and indirectly sprayed pure water and it's resembling early morning dew, I guess that might have something to do with mushrooms always popping up in the morning. The mycelium smell has become somewhat pungent, and much more noticeable.

Haha did you jack a Walgreens tote?? Hands were itching to do it years ago when I was working there. Dunno if that’s what you have but those are perfect for cult.
Also, lookin good. I’d guess it’s T minus 2-4 days until you see knots.

Looking good, nice pics btw.
I recommend you to try this next time! You will be sure about how many holes and positions, worked well for me

I appreciate the reassurance, hopefully these will work out. It's always iffy with cultures and having them produce right.
more pics, from this afternoon.

I think knots are forming but I’m not sure, the whole “cake/tub” is shrinking & retracting from the container it’s in, some pale yellowing & more bruising is occurring, also lots of threading structures are forming on the sides, not sure if that means there’s something wrong with their environment (humidity/FAE) ? It’s a slow process but I think it’s coming to fruition.
