Not your ROUTINE Heating question

Okay my friend was finally able to stabilze the temp holding his 1/2 pint jars. He has them in a tuperware setup. He is using a heating pad for heat, sandwitched between to dry towels. The jars sit on top. He moniters the temp with a remote unit that sits inside of the incubater and has a stable 84.4 degress, (it will flucuate as high as 84.8 and as low as 84.1, suffice to say thats ok)
Now the question: Is there any fundamental "danger" to the heating pads, (my friend always leaves the setting on low, as it maintains the proper temp) being left on 24 hours every day, for (so far) the last 3 days?
He told me one night the fire alarm went off and he almost shit his pants! He later told me maybe the alarm batterys are weak or something, as the heating pads are brand new out of the box. Any body using heating pads I would greatly appreaciate your response!!!
T/y in advance

I'm sure my friend has the right temps, however he is more concerned about the heating pad being left of for (so far) 3days. Obviously it, (the heating pad) will need to be left on for many, many more days, and weeks, he's wondering if this will (or is) a fire hazard? Or should he be okay, and not to worry?

I never had a problem with any heating pads ....you just dont want to use them so long that they might get a short because it may cause a problem/fire

what is the longest period of time you've gone b/4 either turning yours off, or turning down? (my friend can only turn his "down" since he already has it on the lowest setting)? YOu seem to have a VERY good handle on it, my friend would be interested to hear about your set up
