None of my cakes have pinned
    #26355863 - 12/01/19 04:24 PM (4 years, 4 months ago)

None of my cakes have pinned. Two were thrown out to suspected contamination after full consolidation. 8 total are in a 55L SGFC with a few inches of damp perlite. I experimented with the cakes. Some were dunked and rolled. Some were just dunked. And some were birthed straight into the chamber. Some on foil some on damp perlite. The cakes have been in the chamber 10 to 14 days at this point. Misting 3-5x a day and fanning 3-7x a day. Temp is between 70 and 73. IDK about humidity. So I just ordered a hygrometer. The only thing I can think of is that I used a couple extra cups of verm when mixing my substrate because I thought it was too damp. So maybe I ended up having a low water content for the cakes after consolidation? But, they all colonized within a 2-3 weeks. Also a lot of my cakes have blued. I have handled them more frequently and possibly more roughly than I should have. The chamber does not smell like fresh mushrooms anymore either. What should I do?

It's possible that you are pestering your cakes! That sounds like a lot of misting and fanning, which doesnt seem to be so much recommended these days. I would try leaving them alone for a few days. There's holes in the FC so they dont need fanned, and they need misted only when looking on the dry side. The blue could be brusing from the misting, if so they will be okay.

I know when I started growing I was way too fussy over my cakes and pins took weeks. Misting, fanning, peeking, poking, they never got a chance to pin until I basically neglected them for a week! I dont know much about SGFCs though, I use a humidity chamber and it seems less hassle, works for me anyway.

What do you mean as in leave them alone for a couple days? No fanning? just misting?

check out pf tek.

You’re almost doing it already! A lot of experiments have been done and then people do write ups of what works the best!

All you have to do is type in “pf tek” in the search

Gluck dude!

I was following that method - almost exactly, and I feel like I should have pins by now. Should I re-dunk the cakes?

yes. Blueing also a sign of dryness. You may want more than 2 inches of perlite in your sgfc. Misting is not necessary so often. Probably like almost never in a sgfc.

The perlite is what needs to be kept wet.

Dunk your cakes for 6-12 hours, roll in verm. Use small pieces of foil to keep them off the perlite.

Then leave them alone and don’t open the lid, grab the cakes, mist or fan them like you have been doing.

Basically try to do the opposite of everything you done lol

Gluck man, let us know what happens

No need for a hygrometer just mist a couple times a day.
They will pin when they are ready to it can take time which is why we consolidate

Also trim your foil to the same diameter of your cakes. Cakes can’t get quite the right environment with larger than cake foil.

I vote it's your blasted SGFC.  Those things are too airy, and I bet your cakes wouldn't be blueing in a tub with a hole configuration as described in pastywhyte's EZdial mono tubs or whatever is the name.

I just mist every two or three days and that's it.

Some people report success with SGFC, I know.  Whatever.  I guess they work in certain climates maybe.

Also, don't get worried until three weeks.  Call it at four.

Sometime they don't pin.  Subtle contamination can cause that.  Or, sometimes, you get a dud strain off the agar plate.  They don't all fruit well.

Multispore should have enough strains in it that some will be good fruiters though, if it doesn't go moldy on you first...

So I dunked them for 7.5 hours. Rolled in medium to fine verm. Ran water through the chamber to re-moisten the perlite. Cut smaller aluminum foil pads. Placed the cakes in the chamber. Misted the cakes... From here, what do you recommend as far as taking care of them?

So I have another syringe I plan on inoculating my second round of substrate half pint jars on Wednesday this week. The strain is psilocybe cubensis, Puerto Rican. I have seen online some crazy results with a mono tub. Seeing you are not a fan of SGFC, what do you recommend for my next method?

You should have just left them alone the more you keep touching them the more you set them back

They work in any climate but they are designed to be full not for a couple cakes , if it's not full you have to compensate and keep your conditions idesl

Not sure why so many nubs are suggested to use the sgfc, only seems to work for them half the time.

Just leave them cakes alone now and like he said, maintain moisture.

I believe you need like 5 cakes to make a shoebox. (6qt sterlite)

I am going to inoculate 5 jars on Wednesday. What method do you think I should use after consolidation?
