Pine Spike?
    #26356110 - 12/01/19 07:19 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Tried keying this with David Arora's old book, "Mushrooms Demystified."

Chroogomphus vinicolor?

Found under a tree... which I thought was a Doug Fir, but yeah, could have been a pine.  (Ok Ok, my wife found it, not me :smirk:)

This is a robust mushroom... dug up from soil on SF Bay Area peninsula.

Spore print certainly can pass for "olive gray"... I think?  (see pic)

You guys are great - thanks for the fun!

Chroogomphus for sure. Maybe C. rutilus, but I only see two registered finds of
that species in the US, however they are both from California, one from SF bay area.
So I guess maybe C. vinicolor is also a good candidate.

Interesting.  I assume you use Mushroom Observer?  I'll have to make better use of that site.  Thanks!

Yes, www.mushroomobserver.org and www.inaturalist.org are good resources for locating certain species occurrence.

I'm in Norway though so not specialized in any way according to your area.
