Fuel M pellet field capacity?
    #26343917 - 11/25/19 05:36 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Is there an easy and fast way to achieve field capacity with wood fuel pellets? I've used these in the past but cant recall the water to pellet ratio that I used. I did a simple bucket tek similar to the tek used to prep coir this worked fairly well but either didnt use enough spawn or substrate as the reishi did not grow very large.

I have developed 3 formulas for mycobags that can be adapted for many uses/sizes/species as needed.  Hydration level depends on the target species.  The grand total weights shown are not achieved until after adding spawn and you'd use slightly more spawn with the larger formula:

4.5 lbs. 60% water formula

1210g water (optionally use hot or boiling water)
15g concentrated (20%) H202 (optional, only use if you will not be pressure cooking)
756g compressed wood pellets
30g gypsum
30g corn gluten (or other dry supplement) (optional)

4.5 lbs. 65% water formula

1312g water (optionally use hot or boiling water)
15g concentrated (20%) H202 (optional, only use if you will not be pressure cooking)
654g compressed wood pellets
30g gypsum
30g corn gluten (or other dry supplement) (optional)

5 lbs. 60% water formula

1360g water (optionally use hot or boiling water)
15g concentrated (20%) H202 (optional, only use if you will not be pressure cooking)
830g compressed wood pellets
30g gypsum
30g corn gluten (or other dry supplement) (optional)

I'm planning to spawn reishi that I have colonized. I plan on doing a tub as I have seen them do pretty well and produce beautiful antlers. Would you have any recommendations for 3 quarts of spawn with your recipes?

For a 66qt tote, you'd probably want to use 2x the 5lbs. formula (10 lbs total) plus all that spawn.  Give it plenty of fresh air.  Not sure about this though, you may need to triple it for a decent substrate depth.

Thanks. I will give it a try and see. My main concern is the water to pellet ratio. If the substrate isnt enough I will prep more. I may have to prep a little at a time regardless as I only have 1 useable bucket. I can only assume my prior failure was due to inadequate substrate or too little water in said substrate although I do not recall how much spawn I used.

Well...I used one of the formulas above and kind of winged it as I dont really have an accurate means of weighing. Sub seemed like it may be on the drier side but enough water was used to expand all of the pellets. I guess we'll see in a couple weeks

Add water then squeeze a hand full keep adding water until you have 1 drop when you squeeze hard.

If you are going to grow you need a scale. If you had a scale you could figure out your water content by using a microwave to dry out the sub...

If using this process you must keep drying it until the is no change in weight. Or you will get bad results. You will think it is dry but there is much more water in the sub so be careful. It will take a long time so make sure you write everything down so you can repeat.

You can get a kitchen scale with really good reviews for as little as $7
