    #26352290 - 11/29/19 03:41 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Would they melt or something?

They're made from polystyrene which will melt. You can find PP reuseable petris
on the zon or the bay though

Get glass

But it boils over when you pc them

Making agar in jars with a pc works well, only downside is the jars aren’t as easy to work with, depends on size of jar though I suppose

Yeah I even tried it just to see came out as a chunk of agar coated in a ball of plastic lol. I been saving baby food jars to try using for clones but idk probably won't be very good some jars are real short so many those. Or maybe they can be used as slants if the lids hold up we will see.

Just get a media bottle, a SAB, a laser thermometer and learn to pour. I've poured hundreds of plates in a SAB with a media bottle and only had one contam. Follow BOD's teks. Seriously I've used and experimented with his teks for years and have never been steered wrong. Agar is only hard your first time, but what isnt?

I've got everything but the media bottle and thermometer...are they both crucial to pouring agar?
Any way I could just use a Mason jar?

Neither is necessary. You can use any glass bottle with a lid. Better to use a
bottle with a tapered neck vs. a mason jar but the thermometer is pointless.
Pour when the agar vessel is cool enough for you to hold with a bare hand

Doesn't boil over on me.  All Ive ever used is autoclavable petris.  Ive got pyrex and polypropylene ones.

Agar in petri that’s pressure cooked, boils over on me most of the time if not all

Seems like lots of people are doing no pours in glass petri dishes and sterilizing them already poured. Pouring after is easier than pouring before and dealing with having to let your cooker cool down super slow and then having to unload poured plates out. I think people do it because they're worried about what way is easier to be sterile. Worried about pouring or think its a hassle. I would say just get pouring down. It's ridiculously easy.

Ya man it seems that's the way to go, come Monday I'll be all set to give it a try.

Hey would you mind taking a quick peek at my recent thread called "mycelium turning yellow " and tell me what u think is going on?

Thanks in advanced!

I already owned a laser thermometer, so it wasn’t a new investment.  But if I didn’t own one I think I’d probably buy one for pouring.  There’s something nice about pouring at exactly 115F.  Hot enough to finish pours before it starts to gel up, but cool enough that condensation isn’t an issue.  If you have condensation issues with poured plates, a laser thermometer is worth it.

After a few pours it's pretty easy to tell when to pour to avoid condensation.
