Will anything decent come out of this?

I decided to spawn brf cakes to just straw. Will it actually fruit? It looks almost colonized, but the straw wasn't leveled and there are some pieces that point towards air. Should I remove them?

Why didnt you just make a proper fruiting chamber or shoebox or mono? Or follow a bulk substrate tek?

The straw needed to be chopped way smaller. And we have no idea how you prepared the straw. But all things considered I would bet on it not working

Why not?
Looks like it’s going well under there...
I’d leave it as is, any fruit will grow out around surely
A fruiting chamber would be a good idea

I don't think it looks like its going well thick mycelium that's not colonizing the straw

It's been only 3 days since spawning so I guess the only thing I can do now is wait.

Lookin better. I would definitely keep waiting.
Shrooms are pretty resilient anyways. I bet you will get some fruits.

Where can I find an optimal way how to use straw as bulk substrate? I cannot find any decent tek.

I've been wondering this for many years but I almost want to take an angle grinder to the hay and get it all ground up and then pasteurize. I don't know of anybody who's done it but I would like to try it at some point.
The idea would be 5 gallon bucket of water and a saw blade or grider blade down in the middle with all the hay to grind up. If I can manage it I'll post my results.

People use weed eaters to chop it up.

If you want quick, just take a bale and set it on a big tarp or piece of visqueen, then use a chainsaw to shave it into piles. Grab both sides of the tarp and lift to collect in the middle. Might want to turn down chain oil output a bit... That's the Budweiser tek I haven't used straw in years, but I used to just sit down with two buckets (one with uncut straw and one empty) and take a pair of big shears and go at it while I watched movies. It went fairly quick for small projects... Lots of required...

depends how bulk you're talkin'
this guy uses multiple runs through a bale chopper, i'm sure a mulching mower for leaves would work similarly. he uses the bale chopper at :44 :
for a bit less at a time i'd think that some straw that's been wetted just slightly in a 5 gal bucket would get ripped up pretty good by any number of those paint mixer attachments they make for drills. Search for the kind used for mixing drywall mud, google "Wallboard 43-001 Drill Attachment Quick Mixer"

Got some fruits. Mostly side pins probably due to bad surface conditions. I spawned two cakes btw
