Hey Pubbers!

It's your old pal, Newbie!  It's been a while, and for those who are curious I figured I'd give you a recap of what I've been up to all these years.

I left the Shroomery at a time in my life where I needed a big change.  I needed to finally leave the nest and start a life of my own.  I was going nowhere living at home with my father, I'd just gotten out of a really rough breakup, and I had the opportunity to move close to NYC, something I've always dreamed of.  So I did just that.  I got promoted to leadership at work and transferred to North Jersey and I moved in with Gumby, who needed a roommate. We lived together for about 4 years.  It's crazy how much growing up you can do in that time period.  He ended up getting an awesome new job and moving closer to it, and I moved in with a great friend I met up here.  It was a really fun few years, but living on my own like that actually caused me to drink.  A lot.

I became a full blown, yet high functioning alcoholic.  Any second I wasn't sleeping or working I had a beer in my hand.  Sun up till sundown on my days off.  This continued up until December of this year when I'd finally had enough.  I was 267lbs, looked and felt like shit, and I was just tired of being drunk all the time.  I've made a shit ton of friends up here, somehow, and they've been crazy supportive even at my worst.

As of December I've gained total control over my alcoholism;  I quit for about 6 months cold turkey and during that time I quit cigarettes as well and started eating a proper diet.  I've intermittently had drinks since then but it never turned into what I was before.  It's like I reprogrammed my brain.

I've been hitting the gym almost daily, eating right, just keeping busy and happy.  I'm currently in the best shape of my life.  Better shape than when I was in middle school or high school.  I now weigh 187lbs.

That's 80lbs down from 11 months ago, and it's still not real to me.  I've never felt better and one of the main reasons I'm back is to get back into my old Shroomery hobby.  It's been like a decade since I've dabbled and I'm excited to see where it takes me.

Since I've been gone I've been writing a lot of standup material that I hope to finally take into the city and try it out.  I'm not expecting it to go anywhere but I'd love to have that outlet available when I need it.  I've also really upped my cooking game.  I'm always trying out new recipes and feeding my roommates whenever I can.

Anyway, I could go on and on and on, but how the hell are you guys?!  What have I missed in the almost 7 years I was gone?

Welcome back good job on the weight loss. its great to hear a story about someone who got their drinking under control, too often I meet people who had a problem and had to quit totally forever. That's just depressing, I never want to lose my ability to go out and have two beers with friends...

Thank you!  The hardest part is that it's so widely accepted.  I'd be on Facebook (which I also quit lol) making posts and jokes about constantly drinking or wanting a drink and get a million likes on them.  I'd go on drunken rants and it'd be a huge hit.

Once I got it out of my system and started being able to have fun without it, I knew I'd be ok.  That's the other scary part.  It became so routine that I couldn't picture doing anything anymore without that alcohol blanket.  I'm lucky I didn't graduate to booze.

Hey man, I'd ask how it's going but it seems like it's going good! Really glad you got yourself out of that spiral, my little brother just went through a detox place to try to get his drinking under control and detox medically. How was your mental state after quitting? He's getting a lot of anxiety, which I've heard is common.

Anyway, glad you came through in one piece! I look forward to hopefully seeing you post, and seeing some stand up would be pretty cool if you felt like sharing.

A TON of anxiety, depression, insomnia, cold sweats, nightmares, the whole nine.  It's really cardio and lifting that got me out of it.  After a long run on the elliptical I feel like a million bucks and I have such a, "I don't give a fuck about anything" in the most positive way possible.  Even if he just does like 15-20 min of cardio a day it should keep his mind off of it and give him that boost he needs.

I wish him the best!  Good to hear from you again, man!  All these avatars are bringing back so many memories.

Thank you, man I really appreciate it. Gumby and I speak daily.  He's a very close friend, one of the first I've met from the shroomery and he's been there for me through thick and thin.

Congrats Newbie!

Its been a looooong time. Glad you got over your drinking habit. Its easy to fall into, Ive experienced some of that myself.

Youre looking healthy, well done man

Lots of changes in Mushroom Cultivation, lots of new things to learn. Enjoy it! :mushroomgrow:

Never met Gumby but he seemed like a really cool dude from his posts. I've always wanted to visit the famous NYC. Someday i will check it out.

Thats cools you're getting into stand up comedy. Malcom_XTC has also gotten into stand-up as well. Very cool thing to try out.

Congrat's on the improved health and lifestyle Newbie, that's awesome news!  The relative total acceptance of alcohol use does indeed make it a tricky habit to manage.  I drink everything, and have for a very long while.  I am high functioning, and generally know my limits and can abstain when necessary... but it is nevertheless something that I have to actively manage and can easily tilt into an area that I am not entirely comfortable with.  Fortunately, I've mostly been able to recognize when that is happening and turn it around right quick.  But taking a six month break?  I don't think I've done that since I was a teenager! :tongue2:

Anywho, welcome back to the Shroomery, and thanks for sharing your story.  I just got a line from Gumby a day or two ago as well, it's great to hear from both of you! :sun:

Hey Newbie!

Glad to hear your life is on the right track! Congrats on the weight loss, and ditching all the drinking. Those are two of the toughest and most widely accepted addictions there are. If you can do that, you can do anything.

Funny, just coming back from a 4+ year shroomery hiatus myself, and I'm in a bit of awe looking at all the new teks and things that have changed over the last few years. There might be a lot of new faces, but somehow the vibe always stays the same.

Glad all is well. :bigjoint:

Thanks for the kind words, guys.  I haven't been on a forum since the Shroomery so I'm re-acclimating   You mean there's NEWER teks?  Like beyond monotubs and stuff?  I gotta get to reading!

Damn what a screen name to see. Despite the last weird bad day I was having that caused us to lose contact, i still think about you a lot.

I did stand up quite a bit and have laid the mic down to focus on love and work. Both are going so so.

I rarely sign on anymore and was really surprised to see you posting.

Your health looks solid and im sure your stand up is better than you think. Just keep at it. NYC is a different style than here in ohio, but you are a quick witted guy.

Glad to see you.
