Safe to eat wild mushrooms?

I have come to the realization that eating wild mushrooms near roads and such may not be safe. I have never gotten severely ill. But I picked some mushrooms 5 feet from a busy roadway and they seemed to give me a stomach ache and lots of gas. Some other cyanescens I picked in really old blanched white wood chips that were heavily irrigated and thousands of feet from a roadway tasted much less and did not upset my stomach even though slugs had bitten them.
Not sure if this is the right category. Can anybody confirm that people have poisoned any mushrooms intentionally? Has anybody gotten seriously sick from eating one with something like garbage or poop on it? I’ve just always thought it was safe before.
I have personally been told by a woman who hunts these that one of her patches was “fumigated” with poison.

They'd Have To Be Directly Spraying The Mushrooms With Poison, & That Is Very Unlikely. They Could Spray In The Area, But It Would Have No Effect On The Mushrooms.
Mushrooms Don't Have Root Systems Like Plants.

I can't really tell, it sounds a bit far fetched. Fungicides are the closest thing I'd come to deliberate "poisoning" but that is usually to get rid of a fungus that in some way is harmful to structures, plants or people. Then there are certain weed killers that are sprayed in gardens, which is often dyed to make it visible.

Given that some of the most popular hallucinogenic species grow on poop, I'm pretty sure that some poop may be consumed unintentionally, but probably not in very harmful amounts.
But you're talking about mushrooms growing near trafficated areas, and I personally would be careful if they are directly exposed to traffic pollution. Like there are chanterelles annually growing downtown by a traffic heavy road in the city I live in, they get covered in grey dust and debris really quickly. I leave them alone to be on the safe side.
Mushrooms are also, in various degrees, accumulating toxins and heavy metals from their surroundings, so you should be careful if collecting large amounts from areas that are known to be exposed to heavy metals or toxic waste. But I guess there is need for greater caution if you're collecting edibles for the table rather than a few measly grams here and there for tripping.

I've read this also - if you are doing culinary collecting you need to watch out and don't collect wood lovers growing on things like treated woods like railroad ties or certain tree species that the mushrooms may acquire toxins from - like you may not want to eat chicken-of-the-woods that are growing on eucalyptus or I've also heard honey mushrooms from certain tree species, though I don't remember exactly which.
From what I understand mushrooms can also be good at removing heavy metals from the soil - so eating those that grow right next to a road may be somewhat hazardous because of our past use of leaded gasolines, though unless you are consuming large amounts you likely will never know or experience any problems. Nonetheless, we did leave alone all of the edible items we saw the other week growing in an area known to be contaminated because it was downwind of a smelter - lead, arsenic and other nasties in the soil, in concentrations not so high as to keep people from using the area completely, but high enough that the county is capping all of the paths with gravel and fresh soil to keep people from tracking things out.
Now if someone is spraying something like weed killer right on the mushrooms themselves, that's a whole other matter..... I wouldn't eat those and don't think I'd even trust them if they were washed, which generally doesn't work well for mushrooms anyway.
If you are just worried about poop and the bugs it can bring to the party, cooking is the best way to take care of that. With culinary mushrooms, most people will do this anyway as many, if not most wild mushrooms, other than few like porcini, will probably give you some gastric upset if eaten raw. With hallucinogens, I understand people who are concerned will make a tea rather than eat them raw.
