Bolete ID request - California

Hey guys,
I found this baby something in a garden bed with wood chips on top in the Central Valley. I know this is kind of early to properly ID, but can this be a bolete? There's a young apple tree in the bed as well.

I'll update the pics in a few days.
Thanks!

A kind of bolete was my first hunch when I saw these pictures just now, but wait until it matures a bit - hopefully it survives a bit longer.

We've got this crazy 40 mph wind today, I'm just hoping it won't dry it out or stun its growt too bad I think I'm gonna cover this baby with a rubber bucket or somtim.

Yeah a little early to ID but it sure looks like an edulis of some variety

Well, whatever it is, it's very slowly growing despite the recent rain. Update pics:

Curious what this turns out to be. I'm currently suspecting something with gills. Is Armillaria out of the question?

Hmmm, Armillaria isn't out of the question, they grow in that bed in big chunky clusters. I was also thinking at some point that it maybe just one of them, but it looks (as of now) so different.

Did it tick the bolete-o-meter for you as well?

Yeah. With that bulbous stipe and cap shape I though bolete for sure but the updated pics show it's something different.

But I so wanted it to be a bolete ....

I'll still update with picures, 'cuz this thing is gonna be huge based on it's "stem" diameter
Thank you for waking me up from my delusion

There was never any reticulation and so I assumed it was a gilled sp. I am seeing veil tearing too. Def not a Bolete. I agree with armillaria

Looks like a stretched cortina to me instead of gills.

Well guess what? It's Armillaria! albeit a weird looking one

I also found an old "cluster" of the (supposedly) same species, under a vine:
