This is my first time posting here - although I read up here daily and I can usually find the answer to the question that I am seeking. I thought I would try being interactive just for the heck of it. I have two shoe boxes that are colonized and consolidated and they are starting to pin on the sides but the top looks very dry. I have misted it lightly but I am afraid to mist it too much. I definitely do not have it "dialed in" - but I am gr owning side shrooms at least. How moist should the top be? Thank you in advance kind shroomers. Lauda

side pins are nothing to be concerned about for new growers. i would increase misting for sure, but there is no numbered answer as to "how much" you just have to develop an eye for it.
also, next time post this in mushroom cultivation instead of the pub
welcome!

yeah, mush cult or getting started is where ya wanna post this
also, attach a pic... we can tell more about your situation by seeing what it looks like
pins generally form on sides & bottoms if your surface conditions aren't ideal, but also just happens
it takes a while to learn how to dial everything in just right to get the best surface conditions in your own setup

Thanks...I am still trying to figure out this site. I am not sure how to pick a specific topic to post under, but I will work on figuring that out.

As for your substrate, some photos would help. You upload them using the "Pic" link at the top-left of the page

With shoeboxes I tried all kinds of ways and finally settled on just keeping the lid snapped shut on one end and the other loose. As long as you give it a light mist then mist the bottom of the lid it should be about right. I’m also in a very dry climate so if it works for me it should for anyone. Usually I need to give it a very light mist every 24-36 hours this way.

You're saying that's all you did for your FAE, or your misting?

Yes. I was leaving it half on at first and having serious problems maintaining the surface, especially since I didn’t really know what to look for. Then I read the super long shoebox thread I think mushboy started and a lot of them just click the lid on and don’t open it til harvest.
Once I read that I tried it and it works great.
This is my most recent one. Used a extra layer of coir at spawn then just snapped the lid on and left it for a week then started leaving one end unsnapped, which I don’t think makes much difference.

I thought the same thing as you, from all the reading I had done it seemed like it would never get enough air with the lid on, but there you go.

Nice job man your shoeboxes are looking better and better! Thanks for bouncing off your ideas/experience with me too, it definitely helps.
Seeing your grows has really been motivated me to try a shoebox myself. I've got about 3qts of (bacterial) rye and 12 1/2 pints of brf that I wanna just throw in a tub together, if my two current tubs give me some decent weight.
I really just want a couple ounces to get me through the next few months while I work on a pristine monoculture. I'm on T3 as of now which is just starting to recover from the transfer.
I dont know if I should just give up on these cultures, and work on growing out some clones from my best fruits or just keep isolating my current cultures.
When you take ms to agar and keep taking tiny transfers until you get a monoculture, are you isolating genetics ? Kinda like taking a tissue sample?
My goal is to not even bother innoculating any grain until my culture is absolutely perfect. I want a perfect monoculture/clone that I can inoculate 10 jars with and do a 50/50 spawn to sub and just really try hard for that canopy.
I think if I really put the worm into my agar my next grow will be much better. This current one I just swabbed my agar, grew it out and cut my T2 into quarters and dropped them into lcs...probably wasn't even 100% clean...I was overly ambitious...
