Monotub possible contamination
    #26349850 - 11/28/19 02:12 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Well, after reading hundreds of posts over the last few months, I finally have a reason to post myself. I have a monotub that has been colonizing for ten days (no tinfoil on top, no taped holes, just polyfill) I noticed that the surface of the substrate was covered in tiny droplets of water, maybe for the last day and a half, it was all sparkly. I took the lid off tonight and noticed some grey.... stuff. Not sure if it’s the mycelium, or it’s mold growing on top of the mycelium, or it’s mixed in with the mycelium. It doesn’t smell or look obviously like mold, but it’s not the pure white fluff that I’ve been seeing, it’s definitely much greyer in colour.

Mycelium can appear grayish in its early stages, especially before it consolidates and when you have a dark substrate around it. If it doesnt turn more white and begin to consolidate, then I'd be worried. Worst case, give it a week and see what happens.

Hey thanks for the advice. It’s been about a week now and everything looks good. The grey mycelium tunes whiter and like you said, it was just early stage mycelium. I think I did the casing all wrong, I simply put a 1/2 inch layer of unmixed (with grain) substrate on top of the grain mixed substrate all in one go when I was making the tub. I didn’t cover the holes or cover the substrate with anything but it’s pinning all around now so I’m happy.
