Trump: The Quantum Trojan Horse 1

I'm worried about you guys, us Canadian's southern cousins, the US of A. We have so much in common that we've basically adopted your political spectrum despite it not really aligning with our values... well, at one point.
In any case, you have a criminal as a leader that openly breaks laws and disrupts virtually every institution that he touches. The guy broke the fucking NAVY SEALS OVER TWITTER! He seems capable of finding the exact minimum level of behaviour to not be arrested, but certainly is not Presidential. I mean, you don't seem to care that he's using tax dollars and bargaining with the security of the Ukraine to dig up dirt on a political opponent. The MOST that could come of it would be that Biden had some involvement in getting him a job, which, I mean, the entire trump family has top secret security clearance despite objections from the branch of government that issue those clearances.
My point is, by being the worst and people still saying "meh, he's still ok enough not to kick out"... which, he's objectively a traitor to democracy but... he's finding the absolute bottom of every aspect of your country's willingness to get fucked over, lied to, and betrayed by its leader, which has shown politicians everywhere what we're willing to accept from the people supposed to be representing us at home and in the world. After trump, politicians are going to know EXACTLY how far they can push you, the rules, really anything without consequences as long as they pretend there's nothing wrong with it, like trump's doing. He's finding the language that will be used to justify the fascist state that is built after he leaves office. This isn't just a distraction, it's a personality test of the nation as your leader ratchets up fascist behaviour during a time where reaction can be measured in real time.
It seems like some of you are thinking this is funny or something but in Canada we just had an election that should have been about the climate, but Andrew Sheer's constant "Justin Trudeau Sucks and I'm Not Him"-drum banging and identity politics BS (they're interviewing for a job; qualifications and record are the only things that should matter), that we've slid wayyyy back in climate science understanding and belief to the point where we've gone from consensus, at least in public, to our provinces fighting our federal government's attempt to properly price carbon. Tje guy ran and got a lot of votes on a campaign that was basically "I'm better than the worst man for the job" without providing a workable budget until after the public debates to avoid scrutiny, and no understanding of climate change let alone a plan to management. "pollution" and "climate change" are not the same thing, though types of one can cause the other.
This is the most important time in history to be politically and scientifically up to date. Things are getting scary with the climate and we're not responding. Our consumption is the same, I don't know what we expected to change if we're still "upgrading" things that aren't broken. So we need someone to hold our hands economically so we don't wipe out the planet. It really only fucks with the extremely wealthy and it's absolutely necessary. We cannot afford to wait to fix this because the longer we wait, the harder it gets (fires and now historic superstorm headed for california - kinda hard to beat emissions targets when a bunch of people throw on their gas and diesel generators... and that only gets worse.
China makes cheap shit with few environmental protections only because we insist on having the newest shit as cheaply as possible. If we cared where stuff came from and that the people had a decent standard of living that worked there, we'd have kept the factories in the US and Canada in the first place. But we don't. We just want to be rich and not care. It's really sad. We're choosing our gadgety life that we've only recently had over the future of life on the planet.
And to the justification that your contribution doesn't matter because its so small? first, everyone is thinking that way which is why no one is changing anything; second, how much damage do you need to do before the guilt alone is enough to not want to be a part of it anymore. Since we understand the Great Barrier Reef is basically going to die before 2030, is that enough to stop? it's taken millions of years and billions of years of evolution are represented in the organisms living there and our consumerism is killing it. Isn't that enough to save your money, buy shit you need, not fly when you can drive, not do either recreationally, and just generally live a smaller life? is it so bad to live like 99% of humans on earth that 1% for a couple generations will fuck it up for everything forever? Is there any possible justification for participating in this?
More importantly, what are they preparing you for? If Trump is finding the edges, what is the machine that replaces the government he dismantled? are Canadians going to be treated like mexicans if our habitat becomes unlivable? are we really getting prepared to let shur the doors?
Not only is that planning for failure, it's not going to stop this. The only thing that will, will be the contrition of Western Culture's obsession with money and little else, and a new focus, ideally on doing the most using the least amount of non renewables. That shit gets used once and we're burning all of it now. Is that fair to the future? are the parents not concerned their kids will hold them responsible?
The rest of the world is waiting for you guys to get your shit together so we can get back to emissions targets and BORING POLITICIANS. You don't want a leader that likes the spotlight because they care more about the fame than doing a good job. With how much time you see him in-transit and on twitter, how much work could he possibly be doing?
Please look at NASA's climate time machine. Then watch Anthropocene the film by Ed Burtynsky.

JFC, another one of these.
You won't convince enough voters to matter. Especially here, look around. 80% of the politics posters would vote for donnie again, even as a "protest vote". Just plan for the outcome. Stay away from islands, buy property in the mountains if that's your thing, personally, I got citizenship elsewhere. By "elsewhere" I mean the country that's about to have the most fertile land in the world after the permafrost melts. Also happens to be the country that's got their hands so far up donnie and the GOP you can call them Sesame Street, Washington.
Face it. North America is a losing bet. Move on.

It's good to hear the perspective of a Canadian!
It's my goal to be mostly off the grid someday and reduce my impact on the environment and climate change. The system's a bit of a trap however. It would be difficult to transition to an off the grid lifestyle without a lot of money. So I need to make money, pollute and support the system in order to eventually escape it.. Once off-grid, there are still things like property taxes that need to be paid so it's very hard to get away from the system without deep pockets.
The point is that we can all make a difference regardless of circumstances by making small changes. Like, turning off lights when you leave the room, re-using plastic bags, driving less, not over-breeding, etc.

Not really.
Well, one of those is correct. Not over-breeding. That's the thing that might make a difference.
Right now, at work, I personally use a half dozen triple quads. Big, fancy machines. Use a lot of power, use a lot of nitrogen, we've got a nitrogen generator hooked up to each one. Each one uses about as much power as three average US households in a single year (two, for Louisiana, don;t ask me how, but they really suck down the energy). That's on standby. When they're turned on, (which they are, approximately 19 of 24 hours) they use even more power.
The point is there are people much bigger than you that use insane amounts of power. Sometimes, that power use is worthwhile. Like, for scientific purposes. When I was working on flow batteries, that was definitely useful. Sure, I used more power than a dozen people could use at the same time, but it was for a good reason. Researching batteries. At my current job, I personally use the power of 24-30 household to run.....drug tests. And not employment screening drug tests, but medical drug tests. To make sure the people who are prescribed their drugs are taking their drugs. Nothing else. Simply, "is granny taking her fentanyl pills? LET'S FIND OUT!"
Of course, insurance is involved, and we have to prove to the insurance companies that granny is taking her pills, and we have to double check that, at the cost of more power, when insurance says to double check that, because they have the money and we're a small business. We don;t get any say, especially me, I just run the lab.
Point is, while turning the lights off is, overall, good for the world, you gotta realize that most of the power isn't being used by you. It was a hell of a sales pitch selling thew idea that the average person is responsible for climate change.
The average person is responsible for less than 20% of climate change, directly. Buy and eat less meat, flick the lights off, that won;t fix the problem. Some asshole coal rolling for 15 minutes will counteract what you do all year.
The problem is with the companies. Fossil fuel and meat industry. Those are the ones poisoning our environment. You barely matter, unless you can affect those industries.

Industry does use more power than an average person. Conserving resources is still a worth while endeavor though, even if it is just a drop in the bucket. Too many people think their actions don't matter. There's a huge disconnect between cause and effect.

4% of the world’s electricity is used to produce metallic aluminum from ore. It is a very expensive and energy intensive process. The cost to produce aluminum from recycled aluminum is a fraction of the cost and uses a fraction of the energy. Due to recycling the cost of aluminum is actually less than what that amount of newly extracted aluminum costs.
My point is: it is extremely important to recycle as much aluminum as possible. A lot of recycling is probably bullshit at some level. Recycling aluminum has huge benefits.
