Problems with "Australian Gold Cap" grow
    #26346591 - 11/26/19 11:31 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone else had problems with this variety? Had problems initially with bacteria in grain jars that I'd bought pre-sterilised, but eventually got a modest flush from some BRF cakes. They were actually sterile, but I went ahead and cloned a couple anyway. One clone has grown really well on the grain but I've had 3 shoe boxes through now that just refused to pin! Looking for sympathy really lol. There's another 4 colonised grain jars I've got here that I'm not sure I can be bothered to use up

Sorry but it isnt the variety, its the source, or your technique. Cubes are all pretty much the same when it comes to cultivation, only difference is the name and maybe minor morphological expressions.

I think your big mistake was buying pre-sterilized grain jars and then (I’m guessing here) injecting them with spores, here on the forums we consider both of those risky behaviors. We suggest germinating spores on agar and making your own grain. Its cheaper and safer.

How long have you been waiting for your trays to pin, patience is key in this hobby.

sorry yeah't I haven't really asked anything there have I! thanks for the reply. I was worried I had bought a dodgy spore solution too. I did chuck the pre-sterilised grains in the end and did my own. We're talking like nearly 2 months with not a hyphal knot in sight and there's about to be a mold explosion! (this is the thing I'm starting the thread about I guess.) I did 600ml spawn with 600ml coir/vermiculite mix into a couple of tupperware, which colonised pretty fully except a tiny patch at the bottom, then hasn't progressed. Is that sounding like a problem with the cleanliness of the coir/vermiculite to you?

I might add that I've worked in labs with various different fungi and I might take a lot of shortcuts, but I usually work it out when something's gone wrong in the aseptic technique, the spawning and fruiting's the tricky part for me lol!

I also got a syringe out of the fridge that must be like 2 years old? and managed to get 3 brf cakes through of that, which I have just printed from, so something's working out!

Spores to grain is a crapshoot. Seems like you lost on this throw.

Time to learn agar.

You can find stro’s guide to cleaning and isolating using agar through the search engine or the read more link in my sig. along with many other useful tek’s and guides.
