Quitting then relapsing instead of following through

I often wonder about tolerance and impacts on the body of sudden changes.
I wonder if smoking a pack over the course of a week and then trying to quit for a month then repeating that process over and over.... is more unhealthy than if you were to smoke a pack every week.
The same with alcohol and bad food.
Any thoughts internet warriors?

I know that with alcohol this is really bad for your body, and causes something called kindling withdrawal, where every time you quit the withdrawals get worse and come on faster

I've found that each time I've quit smoking; it get's easier and easier. As in, there's less and less craving.
But then it's also seemingly become easier and easier to get hooked again; once I've a few drinks in me, and I'm around someone who is smoking, the cravings become intense.
I don't intend to get addicted again though, and I think relapsing when you've made the choice to quit is always a bad idea. As is allowing oneself to become dependent on ANYTHING. Smoking is inherently harmful, and I can't get on the 'is it a little less harmful if I do this?' bandwagon.
It's bad full stop, so I figure why do it at all ever?

Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

''Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times.''
Mark Twain
When I quit for real after 20 years it was actually fairly easy after deciding to 'never smoke (cigs) again'. The previous attempts were all 'gonna try to quit'. My weed consumption went up for 6 months but it was worth it. You know you shouldn't smoke but just knowing that and family, friends and doctors encouraging you to quit isn't enough. You just gotta decide to not be a smoker ever again. In my case I lost 2 grandparents and then my bosses wife (my smoking buddy for 20 years) all due to smoking within one year. That's a lot of funerals to attend and the suffering was horrible to witness. After my bosses wife was diagnosed she tried to quit but her horrendous coughing fits could only be subdued by her bumming a smoke off me... damn that was an eye opener. I quit a couple days after her funeral and it's been 22+ years without a puff. After 6 months they smelled bad to me. Cigs had just gone up to $1.75 pack lol and that pissed me off as bad as the realization I was addicted to something that would literally kill me. ''more unhealthy''??? Nah, every cig, drink of alcohol, drug, bad food we skip is more healthy than doing it IMO.

Just in general I think going through withdrawals again and again can really wear you out physically and mentally. I mean, cigs weren’t that hard for me personally but I never want to go through the acute stages with alcohol again I can tell you that. I think your question is a fair one. Obviously the best course of action is to make it stick. You might want to be honest with yourself if you’re not really going to quit but on the other hand I don’t to advise not quitting for fear of withdrawal. It’s a tough situation- being addicted to something. It’s a medical problem and if you have access to healthcare it’s best to do it under medical supervision. The thing about drugs is you gotta pay the piper.
