Microscope service and cleaning?
    #26345172 - 11/25/19 05:34 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Looking for anyone who services light microscopes? My microscope is about 6 years old, I purchased it to look at compost tea cultures (fungal hyphea), but I've accumulated some dust and particles in the optics, making it sub-optimal for looking at spores. Need help. $600 scope that I want to use but can't! I do not know what I'm doing to rip it apart myself.
Thanks!

I think anyone here would have to go to Google to even try to help you find that info

There are professional places that do this, but they are typically very expensive.

First, while looking through the scope, rotate the eyepieces.  If the dirt also moves, you know the problem is inside of the eyepiece.    Clean it or get new ones.

You can clean the ends of the objective lenses with some isopropanol.

If the dirt is still inside, it's likely the prism, which you can remove and clean with a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner.

Call your local university science department and ask who services their microscopes. If you live in an area with a university that has a science department, there will be a local company that takes care of their scopes for them. Once you find out who it is, best to drop by in person with your scope since these guys are incredible at their work, ime, and will see you're just a guy and unless its a big company, if its a simple repair they'll usually charge you nothing or just materials.

I bet it's pretty rare a university doesn't just auction off the old ones and buys new ones when they need maintenance.
