Where to find clear lids for rubbermaid terrarium

Whats up everyone... im pretty new to this board but over the past week instead of writing a bunch of posts
asking ridiculous questions, i spent plenty of time reading through the faq's, tek's, boards, etc to gain as
much knowledge as possible without having it handed to me. I do have a few questions on things im uncertain about,
but right now there is only one question that I really need answered:
Where can I find clear lids for a rubbermaid terrarium? The one I want to buy is the 50 gallon tank.
I've tried walmart, kmart, and home depot and none of them have the clear top, only the solid top.
Is there anywhere online I could order rubbermaid products or do any of you know for a fact any stores
that would carry it? Thanks for your help

best i can tell you is to look for a clear one, then the top will not matter(plenty of light will enter through the sides). unless you are wanting to do a straw tub type of deal.
if a clear top still seems good, get a box cutter and remove a section of the lid and cover with a clear shower curtain. caulk or use humidity resistant tape and seal.
to answer your q, every clear container i have ever seen seems to have a clear body and then a solid top. most likely there is one somewhere yet i have never seen it.
best of luck

Bro, just go to Home Depot and buy yourself a large piece of plexi-glass that'll fit on the top. Maybe line the edge with some weather-strip to keep a tighter seal and keep the thing in place. Been there - works magic.

i couldnt find one with a clear lid either, all they had was clear containers with white lids. So what i do is i lay out perlite on the inside of the lids and put the cakes on that and use the transparent container itself as the lid. it works just fine. i also fruit my cased grains like this, i put them in trays and i can fit 2 trays at a time on the lids and it works perfect.
you understand what im sayin man? its just an upside down rubbermaid. thats how i do it you can easily snap the container from the lid without spillin the perlite around, just test out how you can do it gently before you do your actual grow.

As said above use some plexi-glass. cut a square hole in the lid and duct tape ( if you can't duct it fuck it ) a piece of plexi to it. it will work, although i'm sure the upside down rubbie will also work, although when you mist there will be water issues.

If you don't find a suitable one, you could just cut a large hole and use plastic and packing tape to seal it. I know a guy who couldn't find clear lids for the extra large rubbermaids so he cut a large hole and used huge plastic freezer bags with packing tape. It worked great for him for several years.

i agree. i used silicone to fasten thin plexi over a hole cut in my rubbermaid lid. it peeled loose in a couple weeks, even roughed up both gluing surfaces first. i would have expected the glue to loosen from the lid first, cuz nuthin really bonds to polyethylene. i took it apart, peeled the silicone off, cleaned it and used construction adhesive. argh, argh, argh! aint never coming loose now.

You can cut the top out of the container, cut a piece of plastic (plexi like homelessheathen said) from a pet store etc, and then seal the piece of cut plastic with AQUARIUM SEALER has been my best bet so far. Obviously waterproof It's clear, and dries in 24 hours.

It's a sealer for an aquarium. If it wasn't airtight it wouldn't be watertight, and you would have leaks firing out from the tank.

Thanks a lot for the array of ideas everyone. For now I will continue my search for clear lids, online and on foot, but if all else fails I have a few good options I can play with. Once again, your ideas are greatly appreciated. When I start this whole project Ill be sure to document it online.

Exactly. Check out my ghetto setup:

I just used an exacto knife to cut out a rectangle on the lid, and I used syran wrap as the screen and duct tape to hold it on. It's probably not air tight but it doesn't need to be, the humidity is fine.

I bet hot glue would work too though =)
I like your setup, my only question is what about removing the lid when they are reading for harvest? Or if you do multiple flushes? Wont it be a pain to reseal over old epoxy and a bitch to get the lid off everytime?
