The off grid lifestyle * 1
    #26345081 - 11/25/19 04:51 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Whose done it or knows anyone who has? My dream is to one day have a nice cabin out in the wilderness and be fairly self sufficient. However the more research I do on this lifestyle the more hardcore and expensive it could be. Anyways curious to hear your thoughts.

What're some of the more expensive parts you've encountered?

I live somewhat like that. If I used firewood for heat and produced my own food I could call myself off grid. Most expensive thing that comes to mind is a well.

I love being out in the woods for days on end. Every time I do it solo though, any close-calls (wildlife encounters, severe weather, equipment malfunction etc) the first thing that pops into my head is "I wish I was with people I love, this shit isn't worth dying alone over."

I'd much rather have some relatively quiet and off-the-road land in the burbs where I can keep bees, grow lots of food, relax on a hammock by a stream, but still be able to eat takeout/go to restaraunts, have friends/family relatively close, not get snowed in etc :sun:

Alot of the equipment like say a wood burning cast iron stove or getting a septic system set up. Granted once your set up costs seem to be minimal. Also purchasing enough land and making sure you can cover property taxes.

Unlike Xul who likely has an arsenal of weapons I plan on only using a single shot musket for hunting.

I think it would be a pretty incredible experience to at least live off the grid for a year or so. Just to have that experience.

This is a little different as it probably wasn't truly 100% off the grid, but I remember when I was up in Rock Springs WY (was there a couple of years on a job), I went to the grocery store and this lady was in line checking out with 3 carts filled to the brim -- she kept apologizing to everyone in line because it was taking so long (everyone understood and didn't mind). She then went onto say that she lived 3 & a half hours away and that this was the closest real grocery store to her, and that she only shopped for groceries once every couple of months.

Imagine being in an area so remote that the nearest grocery story is that far away.

I think that lifestyle is fascinating. I don't know how long I could do it but I would love to experience it...even if it was just for one full calendar year or so. I've been in the city my entire existence and honestly I just don't like it very much. Not anymore anyway (if I ever even truly did).

That is really cool Niffla. From what I've read there are stages in how far you can go if you want to be more self sufficient. Some off griders are completely self sufficient for food and water and only need to worry about property tax. However even just cutting the cord on living in a giant city and living in a remote area takes some self reliance even if you still have to go to the grocery store. Granted you would need to be handy.

Yeah absolutely. You'd have to be at a very, very high level when it came to the art of self reliance. And being handy.

All the luxuries we have in the city -- we're a short drive away from anything you'd ever need if you didn't have it. Out there that's obviously not the case.

oh right i forgot about solar power. shoot i could probably afford to install one.

As far as septic, just compost your waste, its stupid simple and I find it rather pleasant compared to toilets. I currently shit in an outhouse that has a 55 gal drum thats been cut in half as its 'tank.' I just cover my business with soil. (been meaning to get sawdust forever but its oddly hard to find) When its full or i have company coming over I use a rope to drag the tank off to a suitable spot to bury it. Even in winter I really don't mind going outside to use it. I dread having a bad flu in winter but that hasn't happened yet, ha. I just piss anywhere outside obviously.

Some women complain about it but i'm like hey if you can't handle pissing outside we're not meant to be

Woodstoves, like one you can cook on? Yeah i imagine ones for cooking are pricey. If its just for heat I imagine you can find one somebody doesn't want anymore for cheap, or get in the spirit of things and make one yourself.

Was just talking to a friend yesterday about off the grid stuff, specifically because of solid state batteries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_battery

Quote:

In 2018, Solid Power announced it had received $20 million in funding for a small manufacturing line to produce all-solid-state, rechargeable lithium-metal batteries.[22] The line will be able to produce batteries with about 10 megawatt hours of capacity per year.[23] Volkswagen announced a $100 million investment in QuantumScape, a solid-state battery startup that spun out of Stanford.[24] Chinese company Qing Tao started a production line of solid-state batteries.[25]

They seem like the future of batteries, being much more energy dense. So hopefully before long we see home batteries using solid state or hybrid tech which are much more efficient.

I'd love to get some land and start out simple, but even a decent sized battery + solar panel could be very useful :strokebeard:

Also watched a video on making a windmill generator, that would be an awesome project. Also saw a video on hydroelectric generators from the same Ukrainian youtubers, basically a waterwheel hooked up to power a battery.

Interesting yea the outhouse idea certainly has merit. Do you keep any livestock? Goats and chickens seem to be pretty low maintenance.

Yeah I've had chickens for a few years now, they're real easy and fun when they're not pissin me off. Even just that is pretty huge foodwise, I could eat eggs every day, and you only need 2 good hens per person to sustain daily egg eating. Of course you'd have to grow grain to sustain them yourself but from what I've read that sounds real easy, especially if its just for chicken food you don't have to process it hardly at all.
I'm gonna have to get a rooster/male duck next spring too, 1 it'd be so cool and adorable to see a mother hatch and raise some babies, and 2 thats some easy meat to butcher or you could just sell em live.

Gonna switch to ducks soon since they suit my climate more, chickens tend to get sick around here. And I really want some geese one of these days. I just love geese because they're awesome birds as pets, but they also sound great for meat from what I've read, they can live/grow fine exclusively on grass/forage, supplement with a little grain and you've got a fat ass bird ready to butcher. And they also lay their own huge eggs of course, i think the rate i read was 50 eggs a year. Get some geese breeding you could fill a freezer no problem

Goats or even a cow are appealing options for sure, get some sort of dairy in there, making dairy products is fun. The people who lived here before me just kept cows as pets, seems easier to raise cows than i would have guessed.

Living off the grid near a city seems ideal.

It's quite a bit more expensive but parking an RV on your recently attained land is a good option. You can get around laws requiring plumbing etc by using one.

My dream is to do that but bust out the shovels and build a downhill ramp to coast the RV into that's deep enough to bury the whole RV. Then theres just a ladder/hatch (most likely the bathroom ventilation bit) to get in and out of my hermit paradise.

From there I'll tunnel out the "front door" to make "additions" to my crib. Including my underground algae fed septic system.

From there you camo in your electricity/water collection systems and for the rest of your life go "lol what house? And pay strictly land taxes

Only hope can give rise to the emotion we call despair. But it is nearly impossible for a man to try to live without hope, so I guess that leaves Man no choice but to walk around with despair as his companion.
