Using a substrate that's below field capacity
    #26344756 - 11/25/19 01:56 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

I'm worried I made my sub too dry and thought it was at field capacity because I've never done bulk or have any experience as to what field capacity looks like.

I was reading a surface conditions thread where they said they used 4.5 Quarts of water to 650g of coir and 2 quarts of verm.

Problem is I used only 3.5! I had to squeeze really hard before I got a stream of water...

Is this gonna result in very poor yields?

Should I "side water"?

You're probably fine, better to be too dry than too wet. If you still have some coir left over you can do a thin top layer and mist it heavy once.

I hope you are right! I'm definitely not going to be adding anything to it as it has just started to knot up...

I heard of people watering their sub along the side...sounds like a contamination vessel but I thought I'd see what some more experienced growers had to suggest...

Thanks for the response though!

If it's knotting just mist and watch your surface conditions keep it glistening they will suck it up if needed.

I don't do any bottom watering until after the sub shrinks. 1/4 cup or so then drain any excess out if it doesn't soak it all up.

That’s field capacity mayne.
You squeeze a bit, see a couple drops. Squeeze the shit out of it and see a stream for 1-2 seconds.

Not a direct quote but this is according to a post by RR.

Ok that sounds about right, had to give it a real tight squeeze maybe not a 2 second stream but definitely a 1 second stream...

I just got worried because I read that tek and specifically said 4.5Q h2o, 2Q verm and 650G coir...

So many varying recipes, I dont know what to believe...

I'm gonna chill out and not do anything rash then. Thanks for clearing that up...
