Do you think it's disrespectful to use mushrooms for recreational purposes?
    #26344384 - 11/25/19 10:56 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys, my name is Mike, first post on here and as the title says I have a question, maybe more of a philosophical one I suppose. I have great respect for mushrooms and any other psychedelic substance and understand that they are powerful tools and medicines. I rarely every trip and when U do I go in with an initial intention and do my own form of ritual before use. A group of friends want me to trip with them and I'm wondering if you think it's disrespectful to use them just for fun. What do you think?

My first trips were for "fun". When I started tripping I was at a point in my life where I was experimenting with all sorts of drugs and, while psychedelics seemed to have something really special to offer compared to say cocaine or benzos, I took them with about as much thought as I took those other drugs and had some of the most special experiences of my young adult life.

Respect them every time you consume them.

They become part of you.
So, maybe what you're really asking is, 'can I respect myself for using mushrooms for recreational purposes?'
Or, 'do I respect my recreation?'

I take them therapeutically.
I take them recreationally.
I take them spiritually.
Whether .3 or 30 grams,
Every time I take them, I make sure they know that I appreciate them.

like others have said its all about your perspective, as long as you enjoy them i dont see what the problem is lol.
thats why i thought the question was silly lol. i understand it in the sense of respect them as in dont eat a whole ounce dry and expect to have a good time with your buds lol, know what you are doing and getting into so you dont end up having a trip straight from hell lol.
thats the only respect that is warrented imo is just understanding how powerful the experience can be, but how they are used is to each their own and i dont even care for the term disrespectful because to me at least it cast shade at anyone who does in fact do them recreational and i feel like we have no real place in judging how someone uses a substance, because there will always be someone els who will look down upon you for what/how you are using and that never makes anyone feel good.

tldr
no i dont think its disrespectful to use them in any way you see fit

I love shrooms in nature, I don't take large doses of them though, .5-1.5 while kayaking, occasionally slightly heavier doses for hiking. i've never gone over 2.5g and unless I was using them therapeutically probably wouldn't. I think tripping with friends and with other people is just as important as the solo or guided trips where we search our minds. I try and split my trips between "recreational" trips with friends, and the others I focus on introspection, usually again half guided, half solo so I can try and get the most benefits as possible as well as stay safe in the process. Personally I love the social aspects of raves and psychedelics, and hope whoever I am with has the same love and respect for psychedelics as I do. they're extremely powerful substances, and they're not for everyone, but when used properly I feel they can enhance alot of personal experiences.

Same.

Tripping for me is all the above...therapeutic in ways, recreational in ways, spiritual in ways.

I'm curious how the OP defines "recreational"....what are you going to be "doing for fun"?

When I eat mushrooms with friends we're all kinda in our own mind and quiet most of the time & doing our own thing...just laying around, mostly just sharing time/space with each other but not interacting with each other much until the comedown.

Mushrooms are so introspective and heavy I just have a hard time imagining what sort of "recreational" activities one could even do while tripping lol.

My own feelings/opinion on this topic....I feel the only thing that goes "against the grain" of mushrooms is spending time while on mushrooms gazing into and putting one's focus/attention entirely into a screen...a TV, a computer, or phone....watching TV/movies, or playing video games, or browsing the internet...basically distracting oneself from oneself and the experience...I feel if there's anything that's "disrespectful" to mushrooms and what they have to offer, it's stuff like that.

From the beginning of my time with mushrooms they've been a 'sit down, shut up, and take your medicine' kind of experience. Sure, there were beautiful moments and euphoric life-affirming periods of trips in the mix, but there are typically various waves in my mushroom trips, and the rough waves are not well navigated in circumstances where I need to hold it together in front of others.

I think it's a self-regulating thing. If there is a such thing as disrespecting the mushrooms, it's likely a lesson you will learn once and never need a refresher on.

No.  Mushrooms are a gift from nature and are meant to be enjoyed.  They are also a tool for exploration of higher consciousness and that's cool too.

I'm on this train too. I'm an NOT a spiritual person, even after years of psychedelic use....just not for me. So what other reason should there be to consume mushrooms other than for fun? I enjoy the experience and I'm extremely responsible in my use, but it really is solely for recreation with therapeutic effects as a bonus.

i cannot take mushrooms for recreational use even if i tried. i need to be alone for mushrooms. back when i was 16 or 17 and i didnt know its power i could do it.

if i wanted to trip for recreation...LSD would be my go-to drug for sure. its perfect for recreation or by yourself.

There's no right or wrong way to take mushrooms. At first, I too did take them recreationally, which most do when they're first stepping foot in the psychedelic realm of mushrooms. As you become more familiar with the playground and see their potential, you tend to gravitate toward being alone and taking a tad bit higher dose.

I take mushrooms on my hikes majority of the time. I dose pretty heavily as well, its just something I enjoy. I usually hike with a friend or alone. Eat either an 8th/4g and spend the peak in the hammocks and enjoying the waves. Would I consider this recreational, maybe?

But for me, I enjoy being outside. I enjoy the feeling of being away from walls, cars, phones.. people in general. It's a good day vacation and is extremely therapeutic. I've probably had more blissful and powerful experiences walking in the woods than someone sitting in their room being blasted into smithereens.

But now that the weather is cooling down, I'll be back on my hanging in the house or room type of trips. Has been awhile since I've done one of those.. so I'm sure itll be magical when I choose to do so.

As long as you're enjoying yourself and appreciating your life.. that all that really matters. You don't need to be alone surfing the cosmos. You can simply be with a good friend and share laughs and build a different type of relationship with someone. Both have their perks.

No need to shame either one. To each their own. Don't let anyone cloud up your sunshine - its YOUR conciousness.

Ps: Mushrooms have this tendency to also make you freak the fuck out and send you down an extemely black hole. Usually, when most people experience one of those trips, they tend to earn a higher respect for them and tend to not lean to taking them in situations that aren't ideal. Its bound to happen one day. They're sneaky little fuckers waiting to give you a reality check when you least expect it:shrug2:

lol to an extent, when i'm at a baseline I still notice a fairly wide range of effects from acid. some times it's insane, sometimes it's like an enhanced version of my reality. that's what I like about psychedelics, they're rarely what I expect but always seem to give me what I want.

I believe what matters more is what you have in your body when you take Mushrooms
I think it's very disrespectful to eat mushrooms with a stomach full of booze..or while on meth or opiates or anything like that. I think that matters much more than if you take them in a recreational setting because like the above poster said, it usually ends up being medicinal anyway.

“Disrespectful” and “recreational” are both subjective and in most cases dependent on a second party placing a judgment.

Unless your are defining your own use recreational and consider yourself to be acting in a disrespectful way, you are dependent on someone else’s opinions and definitions to categorize an activity that takes place entirely in your own mind.

For me I feel disrespectful actions are most often committed with purpose versus disrespect that comes from ignorance.

You need to have knowledge of something before you can truly be disrespectful of it.

I think of psychedelics as tools for self exploration as well as exploration and examination of the physical and metaphysical layers of the universe.

I find people who try and limit the use of mushrooms in any way to be simple and rigid... those who feel they need their own experience to be “spiritual” in some way.

Simply stated, everyone’s experiences are either a gain or a loss to themselves and the people around them. If you are gaining knowledge and insight, who cares how the experience is defined?

There is no higher purpose than recreation. If you're not having fun living, what is the point of life? Fun and education don't need to be at cross purposes- I'm always reading science articles for fun, for instance.

So no, you're not "disrespectful " for using shrooms recreationally. Enjoy, have fun, and maybe learn something new in the bargain. People are always talking about having a "relationship" to God. Well, shrooms can help you connect and feel that higher connection to something bigger than yourself. A relationship isn't much of one if your idea of it is to send them a call every Sunday to ask how the weather is. A real relationship involves learning and getting to know each other often. In other words, having fun.

Dutch the puritan notions of fun being of the devil. Play IS worship.

If you disrespect them they'll let you know.  Beyond that there's no right or wrong way to use them, they aren't here for some noble purpose just the same as you aren't here for some noble purpose.  They aren't limited that way.

Personally, I've had more fun with mushrooms then any other substance I can thing of.  Scary fun, trippy fun, sexy fun, you name it. :cookiemonster:

Disrespecting a mushroom is bad news. Where they lack in size they gain in numbers.
