Bulk Substrate Question

This is more so just a curiosity on the myco-science that's actually taking place. I've seen people on here and on other sites use only a mix of pasturized vermiculite and coir as they bulk and were able to get considerable colonization after infusing their grain spawn/broken up BRF cakes/whatever the spawn may be.
Exactly how is this possible, does the mycelium only need to rely on the nutrients from the grain spawn alone or does it somehow collect other consumption from the bulk itself?
Again, not exactly looking for answers on how to make or colonize bulk substrate in a monotub; just want to know what's actually taking place when such an event happens. Thank you.

The bulk substrate you use is where your mushrooms are going to get it's water from. Since mushrooms are 90+% water, we use coir/verm and other substrates that holds a lot of water.
The spawn you use is where they get their main source of nutrients.

Well I've heard it over and over in here, coir is only for moisture... so I'm going to assume it continues to feed on the grain while expanding over the coir/verm.
You could always sterilize a jar of coir and try to grow some spores on it...I'm sure someone has tried it...
Also people grow using agar made from coir water and the spores germinate and mycelium grows. So I dunno

So by that logic, I suppose adding some newly steralized coffee grounds (from a fresh brew) to the bulk and mixing around, breaking up the mycelium to reform would allow for a few more flushes when the original spawn grain becomes spent then? Or are coffee grounds not nutrient dense enough?

Grains have tons of calories and different nutrients if you look at the nutritional content of coffee theres hardly anything to it...so I doubt you'd get anything out of it.
Anything that you can add to spent grains to get a 2nd wind out of them would probably mold and contaminate before anything good happens...
This is why we sterilize our spawn and inoculate it in sterile conditions.

The one good explanation we have is that, while coir does have nutes, spores can’t germinate on it. That’s why we don’t have to pasteurize coir - contams can’t germinate on it.
As for adding nutes for more flushes, it won’t help. It’s like giving an 80-year old a 16-oz steak and expecting him to run a marathon - after 2-3 flushes, it’ll be pushing out a fraction of the yield no matter how much food it has. Plus, grain spawn has more nutes than the myc will be able to use.
