Top fruiting
    #26340986 - 11/23/19 06:45 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

I've got a bacterial jar that's got some yellow metabolites and I'm considering top fruiting rather than dumping it. Im wondering if I do the sandwich bag method does that act as a fruiting chamber and all?

Also just reference, say you have two healthy quarts of spawn one is top fruited right out of the jar and the other spawned to bulk in a shoebox, how significant is the yield difference?

Is top fruiting just a last resort to get anything?

Just trying to figure out if it's even worth it...

The yeild difference will be huge. I only top fruit to collect a print and clone.
↓Top fruiting healthy test jars

↓Wbs spawned to hpoo/verm. After spawning trich showed up on the bottom. The Mycelium ate the contam and fruited.

↓Same cakes that were top fruited were birthed and fruited regularly.

↓Clean wbs spawned to hpoo/verm

↓regular cake fruiting

↓this is probably the best example of a great yeild top fruiting. (Not my pic)

Om that's kind of what I figured... so I can use a sandwich bag on top to make a fruiting chamber of sorts, correct?
I dont have or want to put this in any of my tubs... itll still probably produce but it's not worth spoiling my other jars with it...

Check out MudaFuka's bottle tek for grows that are exclusively "top fruited". I haven't heard that term before, but its pretty much what you're talking about.

Your yields from top fruiting spawn jars will suffer if you don't spawn to a bulk substrate because grain doesn't hold that much water. Mushrooms are 90% water, so they need a good reservoir to pull from when fruiting. The grain provides the nutrition, the bulk substrate provides the water.

You could see what you get out of the top of your grain jars then take prints and start over using those, but don't expect good yields compared to spawning to a bulk sub.

So you’re saying mixing  with coir will have a better yield for the top fruit method?

May give that a try

How bad is the jar? U can probably spawn it to a shoebox if it’s not too bad

It's a quart and it's pretty bacterial, got yellow metabolites and everything..

Whether it's worth it or not to try to fruit is dependent on you and your goals. Bottom line is you most likely won't get very good yields using that spawn. If it were me I'd toss that jar and start over. But if you need that jar to succeed for some reason (eg. you used all your spores, etc.) then I'd say try top fruiting it to at least get a couple prints. If you do top fruit maybe case it with coir or verm to give it a little more moisture.

Here the one is with metabolites and then the other one where the mycelium is acting very strange?

Looks like it’s gonna top-fruit whether you want to or not. Sprinkle some coir on that mofo.

Honestly, if you spawn it to a shoebox, it’ll most likely recover. The yield will be shot, but way better than fruiting in the jar.

Probably won't even fuck with it TBH, but what in the world is up with that other jar?

I would say fuck it and spawn them to 2 different shoeboxes but that’s taking a risk. If you absolutely need some fruits to munch on I’d just top fruit but you won’t get much.

U saying they're both  lost cause? I know the one on the left is bacterial AF but what's up with the other one? U think it's just genetics? The rhizos look crazy in the tub I spawned with this variety (different batch) as well.

I think it might be because it's been sitting fully colonized for 3 weeks now and it has very prolific rhizos to begine with...

That’s invitro pinning/knitting. Like I said, it’s top-fruiting whether you want it to or not.
This means you have an aggressive fruiter on your hands...might wanna rethink tossing it. At least get a clone or 4.

I think it’s bacterial contamination causing that on the right side also. I could be wrong on that but I believe that’s why. I don’t think there a lost cause. Like I said I’d probably go ahead and shoebox them because u don’t have much to loose. I bet at least one of the boxes would do decent.

I don’t think the web looking stuff is pinning

Ok not pinning, but what happens right before with straight grain subs. In my experience, grain trays always went crazy rhizzo like that, then pulled the “webs” back and pinned within days.

Iv never used a straight grain substrate but from what Iv read that shows that’s it’s probably fighting bacterial contamination. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure.

If that's the case then why wouldn't I spawn that to a tub? I didn't think that one looked bacterial...

I just read the same, that its bacteria causing the mycelium to mutate...

Either way you should probably start some new projects so you can get some good looking spawn and grow the fuck out of some mushys:rockon:
