Anybody have any info on hunting for psilocybin mushrooms on the big island? I'll be there for a week in December and would like to know what to keep an eye out for (if anything). We will be staying on the west and east coast during our visit. Thanks

Pan cyans are the most common active mushroom in Hawaii. Sometimes cubes pop up but are rare. Check the rainy/grassy areas of the island. Good luck!

I've done the same but was getting married and I only found Pan Antillarium. I don't want to break any rules but basically you're looking for cow shit. If you google big island pastures / farms there are a few very famous ones that are open for public tours. If you trespass a little you'll find tons of cow patties. Trespass at your own risk. There are lots of public access roads.
You're looking to go into the center of the island or any place with a forested national park. If there are cow horse pastures you're in the right spot. You'll know you're high enough altitude when it starts getting misty. Many locals know about the "good mushrooms." I was able to coax my wife into hunting with me for like 45 minutes before she got uncomfortable with the trespassing. I found Pan. Ant. in those 20 minutes of looking at actual manure. I bet with more time you'd get lucky.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: OH yeah you're pretty much only looking for Pan Cyans but they are amazing and worth it.

Thanks for all the info guys, do the cyans only grow in crap?? Not in wood chips or anything? That just doesn't sound very appetizing to me. But we'll definately keep an eye out and let you all know what we find!

Great info n0bel!
They mostly grow in cow patties but i have seen them grow out of grass/ground right next to cow patties, similar to Liberty Caps (manure-soaked soil).

Panaeolus cyanescens group only grows in manure, Psilocybe cyanescens grow in wood.
Edit: Panaeolus cyanescens are some of the most potent mushrooms I have ever had, 2+ grams dry weight is to much for me and most people I know, but a gram to 1.5g is the sweet spot.

Most of the active mushrooms that you will encounter in Hawaii will be growing on dung. However, I believe that Panaeolus bisporus, which looks similar to Panaeolus cyanescens, can also be found on grass.

When the conditions are right weather as well as environment. They tend to stay away from uncut grass and like growing in shaded areas with enriched soil and especially near small waterways. I have found them growing especially where hay or straw patches form near trees and well cut grass however not a lot of sun light is good if there are small patches of tall grass sometimes they grow well but not if there is an entire field of tall grass. This isn’t from experience in Hawaii but same mushroom species. They go by the name Blue Hawaiians as well
