Spent Brf Cakes to Coir?
    #26339728 - 11/23/19 09:27 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

If I were to shred up some brf cakes after they've finished their second flush and layer in a tub with coir, would everything work? (assuming the other factors are done right)

You can do spent brf to coir and get a little flush, but I'd do a bleach-water (1:200)- (Edit: added ratio for crisis-prevention...) soak first and keep and eye out for contams.  If you want to put the time and coir/verm into it, you really have nothing to lost trying.  I put a good bit of time getting bonus points out of my spent cakes but not with coir.  Mine go to greenhouse projects.  :ganja:

ah ok..by little, how little do you mean? say I were to alter the ratio and use more brf cakes to coir..would that improve the yeild?

I'd do maybe 1:3 to decrease chances of contamination.  You can divide what you have into a couple shoeboxes so you can have sectors to remove from your space in case of contams instead of one big failure.  Best of luck and let us see how it goes, bud.

Spent brf to coir works, but you need like 8 cakes to make a reasonable coir to cake ratio. Don't expect a big flush though. I've seen the mycelium really take off doing this, but the fruits just don't ever seem to materialize like with fresh cakes.

I got 3 flushes out of my BRF cakes so yes it could work but I usually got contaminates after that. The coir isn't giving your fungi food, it's holding water so the energy comes from the BRF which is already mostly used. I'm not sure what advantage you would have here from breaking up the mycelium and forcing it to recolonize and then fruit again as all of this activity takes up energy from already mostly spent cakes. To me this just sounds like an invitation for contamination. But if you are just doing it to see the result then by all means, experimentation gives us insight into how things work and may provide you with valuable insight.

A 1/200 solution of bleach.  I was being quite vague, so I fixed that for ya.  God knows I don't want anyone pouring a cup of bleach in a bowl of water and dunking their cakes.  Jeez.  But you're right: specificity counts.
