Finally!!! Successful P. Serbica/Bohemica hunt! + ID help
    #26339711 - 11/23/19 09:11 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago I made a post talking about how I was having no luck finding any actives this year and was ready to give up. I was told to keep at it and it finally paid off today! This is my first successful hunt this year.

I found some HUGE examples of P. serbica/bohemica! I didn't know these mushrooms could get so big. I haven't even seen specimens this large on pictures online!

Here is where I found them (almost all of them were underneath the pile of tree branches:

A few of them were too far gone:

I'm sure that all of these are P.Serbica/Bohemica:

Big one!

But I need some help identifying these three. I'm pretty sure no.2 is an inactive look-alike. However, I'm really puzzled about no. 1 and 3. I found them in a completely different location than all the other mushrooms and although they look a lot like P.serbica/bohemica, I don't see any blueing. Any ideas?

Those are freaking cool. Love seeing more rare species found. If you ever want to swap prints let me know.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm so glad I went looking today. I didn't really feel like going because I went looking for them multiple times over the past few weeks, spent hours in the forest and haven't found a single one. I told myself that if I didn't find any today, I would just give up.

Nice!

May I ask, is there a creek nearby?

When in doubt, throw them out!

Did you spore print them?  That would be a good first step.

1 & 3 do appear a bit different, with 2 appearing like something akin to Psathyrella maybe.

Yeah, I don't plan on consuming them. I'm just really curious to know what they are (especially no.1 and no. 3) because I haven't ever found them before. They have that typical psilocybe look to them but there is no bruising whatsoever, so I don't think they're P. Serbica/Bohemica.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a spore print and now they're pretty dry, so they probably won't produce one anymore.

Any TI wants to take a stab at identifying no.1 and no.3? I'd be really grateful for an ID.

I agree that 2 is Psathyrella. 1 and 3 almost look like Psilocybe  atrobrunnea, the only true psilocybe (i.e. not now classified in Deconica) which does not contain psilocybin. I believe it’s closely related to Psilocybe semilanceata.

Seems like a long-shot since it’s a rare species, but possible nonetheless— I mainly suggest it because I don’t really know of anything else that looks like that that doesn’t bruise blue. Seems to be, like a lot of Psilocybes, a fairly morphologically-variable species.

If someone can confirm that ID, you should post that collection on mushroom observer, since that species isn’t that well documented.

Edit: this website has some of the few pictures of collections of the species from Europe (note: Psilocybe fuscofulva is a synonym): http://www.mykologie.net/index.php/houby/item/962-psilocybe_atrobrunnea

Thanks for the comment pyrolight. That would be pretty awesome if that's what they are!

Here are a few more photos taken at the exact spot where I found them (middle of a deciduous forest in Central Europe).
