Flame treating plastic to improve adhesion * 1
    #26339349 - 11/22/19 11:36 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys,
Ive been reading alot on this forum lately so thanks to everyone for all the info youve put out there. Ive learned more than I could have imagined.

Anyways I was using the search bar after reading a search bar tek and I couldnt find anything on flame treating plastic. I don't know if you guys notice but PP plastic does not like anything sticking to it. Even that aluminum foil duct tape will peel off and that stuff sticks to everything. The worst is putting door gap seal on the rim of the tub and it just seems to keep off or youre ina SAB and the bottom of it is so slippery shit is going everywhere. Well there's a way to fix that.

I remembered something one of my teachers taught me a while back about getting paint to stick better to a plastic part was to flame treat the part or use an adhesion promoter. I didnt have adhesion promoter so I thought might as well try to hit it with the blow torch. I tried it on the lip of the tub then stuck some foam to it and it wouldnt even let go of the tub. The foam came off and the adhesive was still stuck.

You really dont have to do anything crazy. What I did was wiped the whole lip down with 91%, let it dry. Lit the blowtorch and put it up pretty high then just ran it along the lip with the flame licking the lip at a decent rate of speed. You don't want to melt it, you really don't even need to get it hot. Go all the way around and do it once or twice more. Now if you felt the lip before you felt how slippery it was. To check to make sure it worked just run your finger along the lip now and it will make a noise like cleaning glass with alcohol. Your finger should drag and skip like crazy now too. That tape or whatever you use will stick 2-3 times better than before.

Ive done this to the bottoms of the tub too and it makes them almost sticky. You can do it to almost any kind pf plastic to improve adhesion of inks, paints, glues, everything. I'd have to read up more on the science behind it but I know it has something to do with ionizing the plastic or giving it a charge or something. When I tried the bottom for the first time it was a big tub, after I was done I ran my hand over it and there was soooooo much static there that wasnt there before. So it did something.

Well I hope this helps someone in someway. Ive soaked up so much that I figured I had to give something back. Any input would be appreciated, I like learning. There are tons of articles on it

This is a great tip. Perfect when glueing filters to plastic lids

I can't remember hearing of this before, will definitely try it out. The method I always hear about is just sanding/scuffing up the surface with sandpaper etc and it does help a lot. So I imagine if it is scuffed and THEN flame treated it would be even better. If flames and then sanded it would probably get rid of the superficial layer you just treated. But also the flame might melt the mini spikes you left behind while scuffing, so you can probably afford to use extra coarse sandpaper.

I do microwaving in sealed filtered tubs and the filters would pop off under pressure. Thinking about it now I did have some which were better and these might have been flame treated. I was flaming them to smoothen the drilled holes. If a hole is drilled and you hold a lighter inside the hole the plastic melts and retreats and you get a nice smooth thicker ring of plastic in the hole, so it is less likely to crack.

Another method I used was anchoring the filters mechanically with silicone. You drill a large hole and then a series of mini holes all around it. Now you smear on silicone and push it through the holes to the other side and smear it around, now put the filter on. The 2 layers of silicone are now joined up through the holes and pulling it off is much harder.

Most everything plastic in your life probably has some flame treatment. They use it on toothbrushes to get rubber handles to stici better. Glass and plastic drinkware to get ink or labels to stick. You touch something flame treated every day.

Flame surface treatment is extremely important to the plastics industry.

Pretty much anything made from plastic that's got a label, paint, ink, or anything else adhered to it has been flame treated.

Glad I gave omeone some info. I love taking things from other industries and using them in ways either they werent supposed to or no one thought to use it in that way. Sweet video too, I could watch shit like that for hours.

I like the silicone idea, it reminds me of how you do plastic repair on car body panels.
