green stuff in Oyster bucket?
    #26335428 - 11/21/19 09:19 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

I have been growing oyster in buckets for the first time.  I had two buckets and one just wouldn't grow.  I emptied this one out in my yard to see if maybe I can have it grow in the ground and saw this.

What is all this green stuff?  Is it keeping the mycelium from growing?  I thought that the Oyster was known to be pretty good about not being phased by contamination.

That is mold and it is the reason why your oysters failed.

That stuff will become your mortal enemy and its the most common contaminant for most people.

I would still bury it, it could surprise you. I have thrown contaminated yellow oyster spawn outside and it fruited larger than my indoor oysters

Which part of the process do you think is most susceptible to mold?

I pasteurized my straw with lime, but then it sat on the ground while I waited to load buckets.  Do you think that is a dangerous time?

Improper pasteurization can leave latent contamination inside the substrate.

inoculation when you are working that uncolonized substrate and the whole time before it is entirely colonized is when it is most susceptible to mold

Too much moisture can encourage mold

Ya I think my straw has been too moist when I inoculated.

Also, as I was unscrewing my spawn jars, I noticed that there is mold right underneath the areas where I made holes in the lid.  I decided to cut out that part on very top for all the spawn I used.
