That's what I was thinking. Some looked wavy but as far as I know Cyans don't come this far down south.

There are tons more out there. I'm going back out tonight to pick the rest of them. Its on a main street right out in the open next to a restaurant. Going to be hard not to attract attention. I'll post pics in the actives thread.

If you don't want to attract attention you can wear a bright yellow construction vest, they are basically cloaks of invisibility.

This obviously doesn't apply to France these days.

Sightings have been few down in San Luis Obispo County over past years.
I invite anyone to come and visit the wineries, breweries, craft distilleries, beaches, Hearst Castle, restaurants......
Just bring along some of that aggressive P. allenii mycelium and give it a decent burial in any one of the many wood chipped yards, or botanical gardens, you will encounter.
The world will thank you.
P.S. Trichocereus pachanoi and peruviansis are common landscaping features in this area.

I'm thinking of getting a little patch growing at home to propagate the mycelium. I'm only 40 minutes away from Paso Robles I might pay it a visit and spread the love.

Yeah great call to keep spreading them south. They seem to do well there as long as they get irrigated.

Is irrigation a necessity?
I've seen Agaricus agustus(aka the prince) growing in wood chips up in Cambria. That was a month or two ago in the midst of summer in a very dry year. Next time I see that again I plan on cloning it to MEA on an agar plate.
If P. Allenii can survive without irrigation, I can recommend a place that is carpeted with wood chips (Monterey Pine and Coastal Live Oak) from recent understory clearing for fire prevention.
That place cries out for some allenii.

I thought I've read somewhere that P. allenii also grows on eucalyptus chips. Thanks to CalTrans, we have mountains of eucalyptus chips.
We also have acres of eucalyptus trees that may offer habitat if the species can survive without irrigation. Try Montana de Oro State park for a fine example.
Hazard Creek is a fine example, upstream of the road. The reef at the beach is a great walk on low tides, but be careful if there is a big swell running; as is happening today.
M de O is worth seeing if you have never seen undeveloped coast in California. The walk south toward Diablo Canyon is awe inspiring.

Irrigation is not required but it def helps when it's this dry out right now. This was my first time finding allenii in my town. Since finding these mushrooms I've gone on to look for other wood chip landscaping in my area and there's nothing. The patch I found was being shaded by the building and they were growing under roses and other flowers. The soil around the woodchips still looked pretty wet unlike the other woodchip areas I've searched. Its really warm out here and dry. Hope that helps.

It is when it is as dry as it is right now. When the rains are good it isn't required, but it still helps a whole lot.

I'm still a bit confused on the irrigation issue.
Can P. allenii survive a dry summer into our fall rains W/O irrigation? Will the mycelium dry up and die? We have many saprophytes around here that survive the summers, but I'm not sure if P. allenii has different habitat requirements.
If they can handle dry summers (Mediterranean climate), then we have an abundance of habitat around here.
I'm asking because I'd love to see a this species flourish around here.
