Hey! So I've got some really nice clean plates I was planning on dropping to grain jars today. Some things came up and I haven't had time, and it looks like I won't have time for another three to five days! The plates have been growing for 8-10 days and the mycelium is getting close to the sides of the plates. Question is: should I just let them keep growing, or should I put them in the refrigerator to halt their growth until I am ready to use them? Does refrigeration hurt mycelium at all? Like, if I refrigerate them, will that slow down their colonization speed after I do finally use them to inoculate the grains? Thanks in advance for any info!!

You can put them in the fridge. I always do a transfer when I pull anything out just to make sure everything is still good.

I'd just leave them out and put to grain when i have time. I'd leave the edges of the plate alone because the edges are the most common places for contams. Just cut about an 8th inch from the edges and put them to grain. If they are actually clean, you'll be fine.
The fridge does not harm myc as long as it doesn't drop below freezing. Fridges are dirty though and temp fluctuations can draw nasties into the plates. For that reason i clean them with iso and put them in ziplocks befor tossing them in the fridge. Also, fridges tend to cycle on and off. This creates temp fluctuations which cause condensation. This condensation can cause ant present nasty to spread all over the plate. To avoid this one can put the plate in a little cooler and put said cooler in the fridge. Alternately, you can wrap the plate in foil to help hold a steady temp.

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to go ahead and let them stay where they are.

You say to leave them out and theyll be fine...do you mean that as long as they're clean you can still use them if they've grown to touch the sides of the plate? Ive watched videos on youtube of people using full plates that are touching the sides to noc up grains...ive always wondered if this is ok to do..?

You can do more transfer if you don’t want to use the 100% plates

okay so say I have a fourth transfer plate that grew out to touch the sides if I take a transfer from that can I still consider it a 5th transfer? (as long as its clean) And where would i take the transfer from?, the edge thats touching the side of the plate?
Edit: i guess it would still be a 5th transfer but still,, where would i take the transfer from?

if i have a plate that grew to the edges and i want to transfer ill take one from the middle.
sorta like this one.

it would be the 5th transfer in your case but thats not really an issue. 1ms culture can have more sectors contained in a tiny spot then you could ever think.

The thing to remember is that the edge of the plate is way more likely to have some nasty shit hiding in it. I never use the edge of the plate for noccing up things. Transfer like mushboy said, from the cleanest most organized myc available.
And, i agree with mush on there being way more genetics available than you probably think. Keeping track of transfer or plate numbers isn't important unless your trying to keep a culture around for years and keep track of what grows came from what plates/ Figure out how far you can stretch myc before it starts losing vigor.
